Technical Manager (Gas) – Overview
GTC, part of the BUUK Infrastructure Group, is looking for a Technical Manager (Gas) to provide independent technical assurance and subject matter expertise across all BUUK gas activities. The role involves ensuring compliance with UK legislation, GTC Safety Cases, industry standards, and codes of practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide independent technical assurance across all BUUK gas activities, ensuring compliance with UK legislation, GTC Safety Cases, industry standards and codes of practice.
- Review and approve technical drawings, engineering specifications and commissioning documentation to confirm fitness for purpose and regulatory compliance.
- Act as Pressurised Safety Systems Design Appraiser and Approver in accordance with PSSR and IGEM/GL/5, providing formal technical sign‑off and challenge where required.
- Fulfil the role of Gas Networks Design Approver, including for Multi‑Occupancy Buildings (MoBs), and act as Technical Advisor under GIRS for all BUUK gas activities.
- Lead and support external and internal technical audits, including GIRS and CoMCoP, acting as the technical authority during assessments and close‑out actions.
- Act as an Informed Buyer for all gas technical matters, providing expert input to design decisions, procurement strategies, commercial agreements and land rights considerations.
- Fulfil the duties of Principal Designer under CDM Regulations and the Building Safety Act, ensuring foreseeable health and safety risks are eliminated or controlled through design, and that design coordination and information management duties are effectively discharged.
- Lead and facilitate process safety risk assessments, including HAZID, HAZCOM and other structured hazard studies, ensuring hazards are systematically identified, risks assessed, and effective mitigation measures embedded into design and operations.
- Carry out regular job quality audits across service and capital project work, identifying non‑compliances and driving corrective actions.
- Provide technical guidance, coaching and support to internal teams, contractors and stakeholders.
- Identify emerging technical issues, risks and trends, and implement appropriate mitigation and continuous improvement measures.
- Provide technical support for incidents and emergencies.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the line manager in support of business objectives.
Qualifications
- Degree qualification in an engineering discipline.
- Extensive, demonstrable experience of the design, construction, maintenance and decommissioning of all gas assets (mains, services, multi‑occupancy buildings, valves, pressure reduction installations, meters) up to and including 7 bar.
- Familiarity with and significant working experience with current legislation, technical standards, specifications, codes of practice and recommendations, specifically the Building Safety Act, Building Regulations and IGEM standards.
- Incorporated Engineer with a recognised Engineering Institution.
- Safe Control of Operation AE up to 2 bar.

Desirable Experience
- Experience of initiating and designing projects on 7 bar networks.
- Experience of fulfilling the role of Technical Advisor under the Gas Industry Registration Scheme (GIRS).
- Experience of fulfilling the role of Design Approver and Technical Appraiser as defined by IGEM/GL/5.
- Safe Control of Operation AE up to 19 bar.
- Experience of undertaking process safety studies such as HAZID and HAZOP.
- Experience in training and mentoring others.
Legal and Operational Requirements
- Criminal records check via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) required, as the role involves visiting customers' homes.
- Participation in a standby rota.
- Held a valid driving licence.
