We are looking for a Senior Engineer who would like to help us reach our mission to “earn customer loyalty and drive business growth by providing consistently excellent service”.
Purpose of this role
Provision of design, engineering and technical supervision within the Metropolitan business to ensure the delivery of excellent district energy schemes.
Your key responsibilities are:
- Supervising and taking responsibility for delivery of designs and design review of district energy systems at all stages from inception through to commercial operation.
- Coordinating and reviewing modelling of the technical and commercial aspects of district energy plant operations including development of load assessments and plant selection strategies.
- Supporting the Metropolitan commercial, project delivery and operations teams in management of client and contractor relationships.
- Undertaking site inspections, snagging and witness of commissioning for assets being built ahead of adoption or handover from contractor.
- Undertaking reviews of operational schemes and provide advice on extension, expansion and operational improvement.
- Providing advice and assistance to commercial, project delivery and operational teams within Metropolitan and other Teams within BUUK throughout the project lifecycle.
- Producing reports, calculations, drawings and specifications.
- Preparation of project budgets and estimates.
- Ensuring that all generation plant and distribution network designs meet operational requirements and maximise whole life value.
- Development of site-specific energy strategy and coordinated design of energy centre and district heating and cooling projects.
- Review of design software used in the development district energy design and implement Standards and Procedures.
- Ongoing development of design tools for district energy design to ensure they remain fit-for-purpose and support compliance with evolving industry regulation.
- Provision of guidance to other departments on district energy related activities, particularly, but not limited to design, adoption, materials specifications, and other technical matters.
- Regular review of technology to ensure compliance with Legislation, and to reduce capital and operating costs.
- Managing the design, approvals and handover/adoption process for district energy assets.
- Play a key role in continual development of engineering team knowledge and expertise in district energy design and operations.
- Supporting professional development of Graduates, Engineers and Intermediate Engineers within the team.
- Undertaking continuing professional development to maintain and enhance knowledge of evolving Industry Standards and Codes of Practice, Health, Safety and Environmental related requirements.
- Working in, and produce records as evidence of, compliance with all BU-UK Safety Health Environmental and Quality system requirements.
- Support audit activity required to enable continued company accreditations.
- Provide accurate quality work within the department and company.
- Be readily contactable during normal hours.
- Maintain a helpful and informative work environment.
- Ensure that all relevant information is recorded accurately and submitted on time.
- Comply with the latest company procedures, legislation and industry skills on all aspects of day-to-day work.
- Any other duties as deemed appropriate by the Engineering Director - Metropolitan.
Qualifications
Professional Membership of an Appropriate Professional Institution (eg IMechE/CIBSE) to at least Associate working towards Chartered Engineering level.
Experience/Knowledge
Experience of design and specification of a variety of District Energy (Construction and Adoption) projects at all stages of project development with multiple stakeholders and complex requirements.
Experience in the use of energy and hydraulic modelling and CAD tools.
Extensive Knowledge and understanding of District Energy Industry Standards, Codes of Practice, Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements and related Legislation.
Abilities/Skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Able to produce reports, presentations and other written material to a very high standard and tailored to different audiences.
Commercial awareness and knowledge of project management and contract management procedures.
Professional Membership of an Appropriate Professional Institution (e.g. IMechE/CIBSE) at Chartered Engineering level.
Experience of managing a team in technical delivery of all stages of project development including the development, implementation and use of all the necessary controls and processes to ensure successful delivery.
Experience in line management and professional development of junior engineers.
Ability in stakeholder management, negotiating, influencing and decision making.
