Butler Rose are delighted to be working with an independent accountancy firm in Blackburn looking to recruit a skilled Payroll Manager. This is a stand-alone role managing a busy payroll function for a varied client base, offering autonomy and the opportunity to make a real impact.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The firm processes payroll for over 160 clients and 730+ employees each month. You will take full ownership of the payroll function, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant payrolls while providing an excellent service to clients. The team is friendly, collaborative, and supportive, with a culture that values proactive advice and continuous learning.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Managing the full payroll life-cycle for all clients, including weekly, monthly, and four-weekly payrolls
- Acting as key contact for client payroll enquiries and HMRC/pension organisation queries
- Setting up new payroll clients, PAYE schemes, and pensions
- Processing new starters, leavers, and CIS submissions
- Producing and distributing payroll reports to clients
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of payroll legislation and best practice
- Improving systems to ensure payroll processes run efficiently
- Reporting to the Practice Manager and assisting with ad-hoc duties
ABOUT YOU
- CIPP qualified (preferred)
- At least 5 years' senior payroll/bureau experience
- Confident managing a full payroll function autonomously
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation and compliance
- Excellent client communication skills
- Proficient with BrightPay (training available if needed)
- Highly organised, with strong attention to detail
- Proactive approach with the confidence to work in a stand-alone role

The office is modern, bright and spacious, with dual screens, breakout space, and close to Junction 5 of the M65.
