My client is a growing, privately owned business and we are looking to recruit an experienced Transport Planner to join our team as soon as possible. Our core business is recycling organic materials to land, circa 700,000 tonnes per annum, almost all of which requires road transport. We operate nationally, with several operating centres and a modern in-house fleet made up of a combination of articulated bulk tippers, 8 wheel tippers and articulated tankers. The fleet has recently been modernised with new vehicles purchased in 2025.
The main purpose of our transport function is for in-house use enabling our wider business activity of treating and recycling organics to farm land. We transport as much as we can with our own fleet, but the balance of what we don’t transport ourselves is then sub-contracted to 3rd party transport companies. You will act as line manager for our own drivers on a day-to-day basis, scheduling collections, and overseeing the servicing and maintenance of our fleet. You will also need to source 3rd party transport companies, arranging quotes and booking loads with them. For my client to operate efficiently, it’s critical that they collect materials from clients and deliver them to our recycling sites regularly, on time and compliantly – this makes the role a key function within our business.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide day to day management & supervision of drivers & sub-contractors
- Recruitment of new drivers & retention of existing drivers
- Obtain quotes and book loads with 3rd party transport companies
- Maximise efficiency of our own fleet
- Use the TMS package to book and track loads
- Management of fleet vehicles including servicing, maintenance, repair, MOT and upgrade/replace
- Scheduling and planning movements to maximise efficiencies between collection points and recycling sites
- Working with our in-house H&S team to ensure everyone is safe
Shared Duties
- To act as an ambassador for the Group at all times.
- Health and Safety: to work to and follow all safety regulations under prevailing legislation and any relevant policies and job risk assessment.
- Quality Management Systems: to be aware, understand and work to the requirements under the Group’s external accreditations including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001.
- Teamworking: the nature of work and the size of the team requires everyone to be flexible. The job descriptions are not intended to be exhaustive, and you may be required to complete such reasonable additional or other responsibilities and tasks to help the team as the Group may need from time to time.
