About the Role

As a Decarbonisation Adviser, you will act as the specialist lead for sustainability, resource efficiency and decarbonisation across the Business Wales BDG service.

You will support clients directly, provide expertise to colleagues, contribute to digital content and tools, and work with Relationship Managers to help businesses identify and tackle decarbonisation‑related challenges.

This is a key specialist role requiring excellent technical understanding and the ability to translate complex sustainability concepts into practical, accessible advice for SMEs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist support through webinars, workshops, online sessions and occasional 1:1 meetings, including “Green Ambition” content.
  • Produce and update digital resources, video tutorials, factsheets and signposting tools related to sustainability and decarbonisation.
  • Provide thematic support to colleagues, helping them respond effectively to sustainability‑related client enquiries.
  • Support development and roll‑out of new thematic initiatives, including the Carbon Calculator and “Green Growth Pledge”.
  • Work collaboratively with RMs and Business Support Assessors on specialist projects linked to client Roadmaps for Growth (RFG).
  • Use diagnostic tools to understand client needs and identify decarbonisation‑related barriers to growth.
  • Monitor client progress against their RFG, contributing to KPI delivery and identifying case studies for marketing.
  • Represent the service at business events, networking sessions and engagement activities to promote sustainable business support.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders and specialist providers to maintain a high‑quality referral and support ecosystem.
  • Identify clients suitable for BW Ambassadors or Mentoring Programme opportunities.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of sector developments, legislation and good practice across Wales and the UK.
  • General responsibilities
  • Encourage clients to engage with relevant growth networks and sustainability communities.
  • Ensure high‑quality customer service and compliant data handling across all interactions.
  • Contribute to internal continuous improvement and share insights across the service.
  • Carry out additional duties as required by senior management.
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusive service delivery.

About You

  • Strong knowledge of net‑zero, sustainability and resource‑efficiency legislation and good practice for SMEs.
  • Experience providing specialist decarbonisation/sustainability advice to diverse businesses.
  • Ability to prioritise, plan and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills — verbal and written — with the ability to adapt to varied audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with evidence‑based decision‑making.
  • Resilient, adaptable and effective under pressure.
  • High integrity and commitment to equality, diversity and organisational values.
  • Strong IT literacy, including digital platforms and Microsoft 365.
  • Welsh language skills (highly desirable).
  • Valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
  • Satisfactory DBS check (required before employment).
  • Degree in decarbonisation, sustainability or resource‑efficiency‑related subject.
  • Experience working with medium‑sized SMEs or within specific industrial sectors.
  • Awareness of sector‑specific specialist support available in Wales.
