Honorary Treasurer Disability Advice North East Suffolk (DANES) Trustee Position – Voluntary

About DANES

DANES is a trusted local charity providing specialist advice, casework and advocacy to disabled, housebound and vulnerable residents across North East Suffolk. Our work ensures people can access the financial security, independence and support they need to live safely and with dignity. We are a small, committed organisation with a strong reputation for high‑quality, person‑centred support.

Purpose of the Role

The Honorary Treasurer is a key member of the Board, responsible for ensuring that DANES maintains sound financial management, complies with charity finance requirements, and remains sustainable for the future. The role provides oversight rather than day‑to‑day bookkeeping, working closely with the Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial oversight and governance: Ensure the charity operates within its financial means and complies with relevant legislation and best practice. Oversee the preparation of annual budgets, management accounts and financial forecasts. Monitor financial performance and highlight risks or opportunities to the Board. Present clear, accessible financial information to trustees.
  • Financial processes and controls: Support the Manager to maintain effective financial systems, controls and reporting. Ensure appropriate policies are in place for financial management, reserves, risk and investment. Liaise with the independent examiner during the annual accounts process.
  • Strategic contribution: Advise the Board on the financial implications of strategic decisions, funding bids and new projects. Contribute to long‑term planning, sustainability and risk management. Champion good governance and support the overall effectiveness of the Board.

Time Commitment

Approximately 6–8 hours per month. Bi‑monthly Board meetings, with hybrid attendance available. Occasional additional meetings for finance, planning or governance matters.

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome applications from individuals who can bring financial expertise and a collaborative approach to governance.

  • Essential: Qualified or part‑qualified accountant (ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent), or strong financial literacy. Ability to analyse financial information and communicate it clearly to non‑specialists. Commitment to the values and mission of DANES. Integrity, good judgement and willingness to contribute to collective decision‑making.
  • Desirable: Understanding of charity finance (SORP, reserves, restricted funds) — or willingness to learn. Experience of small charity operations or governance. Interest in disability rights, social justice or community support.
