Role

We are seeking a committed and enthusiastic individual to join our Board as a Trustee and Honorary Secretary (Designate).

This is an opportunity to support governance and contribute to meaningful, long-term impact.

This is ideal for someone looking to deepen their trustee experience or take on a pivotal governance role within a collaborative Board.

Key responsibilities

  • As a

Trustee: work with the Chair and Board to advance and enhance the reputation of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust as an organisation of excellence, inspiring leadership across its movement and beyond.

  • Ensure the Trust pursues its charitable objects as defined in its Articles of Association (public benefit, conservation and protection of wildlife and habitats, places of natural beauty or amenity value, and scientific or educational interests).
  • Educate the public in sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
  • Promote and undertake research in the natural world and publish results.
  • Act in the best interests of the charity and its beneficiaries; contribute to strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Ensure the charity complies with its governing document and relevant legislation.
  • Actively participate in Board meetings and discussions.
  • As Honorary Secretary (Designate): support the Chair to ensure the smooth functioning of the Board in conjunction with relevant staff and to liaise with Trustees to discharge delegated functions.
  • Maintain compliance tasks: ensure circulation of agendas, papers and minutes; ensure a quorum at meetings; coordinate AGMs and any Special/Extraordinary Meetings; ensure notices, agendas and minutes are properly served; and ensure documents are kept safely.
  • Assist with recruitment, appraisal, and disciplinary panels as required and oversee related handover and mentoring during transition.

About you

  • Experience of HR and relevant statutory legislation.
  • Experience in charity and company law, and governance.
  • Organised, reliable and detail-oriented with good written communication skills.
  • Shares our values and commitment to our cause; comfortable working collaboratively with others.
  • Previous trustee experience is welcome but not essential.

We particularly welcome applications from individuals bringing fresh perspectives and who are under-represented on charity boards.

  • Time commitment
  • Trustee Tenure: 4-year term with a maximum of 3 terms.
  • Regularity: 9 meetings per year plus additional opportunities.
  • Location: The Wolseley Centre, Wolseley Bridge, Stafford, ST17 0WT with occasional off-site meetings and visits.
