It’s one of the largest volunteer forces in the country – and now you could be a part of it by giving time to become a school governor.

Being a school governor is a challenging but hugely rewarding role. It gives volunteers the chance to make a real difference to young people, to give something back to their local community and to use and develop skills. Becoming a school governor or trustee is a great way to gain strategic leadership experience.

The purpose of school governance is to provide strategic leadership and to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance.

Typically, governing boards meet every half term and expect board members to undertake monitoring visits to see the school in action, alongside preparing for meetings and training to support you in the role. The time commitment is in the region of 8 hours a month depending on the school and additional responsibilities you take on. Meetings are typically outside of office hours. Your employer may offer volunteering time to support you in contributing to the role

Anyone can be a governor, as long as they are over 18 years of age, and, although all experience is welcome, schools will particularly benefit from volunteers with specific expertise - including those who work in finance - helping to ensure that the school has a board with a balance of expertise.
