Bury GP Federation is committed to delivering Health Equality for all and provides the Clinical Pharmacy service to three Primary Care Networks in Bury. We are part of the Local Care Organisation and work with partners in Health and Social care to provide an integrated service for our patient population.

We are expanding our Primary Care Network Pharmacy team and have an exciting opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician to join our network in Bury. Successful candidates must be motivated and flexible to respond to the developing nature of this role and be able to prioritise support depending on the needs of their allocated network.

Job Overview

Work with the team of Clinical Pharmacists to ensure patients are managing their medication safely and support safe, accurate, and timely prescribing of medication in the Primary Care Networks. Provide technical and administrative support to Clinical Pharmacists and Clinicians, support the Primary care team with audits, guidance, and respond to queries around medication from patients, carers, and health professionals. This includes face‑to‑face and telephone support to patients, carers, and primary care and community staff.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the pharmacy team and clinicians to deliver QIPP and other local commissioned enhanced services to improve medicine optimisation.
  • Monitor and act on safety and drug alerts in a timely manner, liaising with patients when necessary.
  • Conduct medicine audits and other quality improvement or project work.
  • Co‑operate with the admin team to promote and develop high‑quality prescribing processes.
  • Contribute to the development of the service, including service pathways, paperwork, and sharing good practice across network practices.
  • Promote cost‑effective, safe, evidence‑based prescribing in accordance with the local formulary, provide medication review services to patients via clinics in PCN practices and care homes, and deliver plans that maximise cost‑effective prescribing and improve patient care quality.
  • Assist Clinical Pharmacists and practice teams to identify patients suitable for structured medication review and help prioritise workload.
  • Carry out medicines optimisation tasks, including checking inhaler technique, supporting medication reviews and reconciliation, and using consultation skills to work in partnership with patients to ensure effective medicine use.
  • Support initiatives for antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Respond to medication queries or requests, providing medicine information in a professional and timely manner and escalating to clinicians or senior pharmacy colleagues when necessary.
  • Promote best practice for medicines use, including supporting training of practice teams on medicines processes and policies.
  • Ensure coordinated processing of prescription requests (e.g., synchronising medication, setting up electronic repeat dispensing, monitoring medicine use to prevent waste or over‑use).
  • Develop and implement robust systems for shared‑care prescribing, high‑risk drug monitoring, and other drug monitoring for optimisation of long‑term conditions.
  • Update and maintain accurate and comprehensive patient medication records.
  • Develop positive and professional relationships with colleagues and practice teams to support prescribing outcomes for the Quality Outcomes Framework and other initiatives.
  • Attend and participate in practice clinical meetings and other multidisciplinary meetings as required.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the post as requested by the PCN Clinical Directors, network practices or Bury GP Federation.
  • Ensure all activities are monitored and evaluated, attend internal meetings and training courses as required.

Qualifications

  • BTEC/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Pharmaceutical Science.
  • Professional registration with the GPhC.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Experience as a qualified, registered Pharmacy Technician in a community pharmacy or a hospital pharmacy setting.
  • Additional qualifications such as BTEC in therapeutics.
  • Primary care experience.

Experience and Skills

  • Knowledge of pharmacy law and ethics and current legislation.
  • Appreciation of the NHS agenda and government targets.
  • Good clinical pharmacy knowledge including terminology.
  • Excellent understanding of data protection and confidentiality issues.
  • Awareness of key prescribing priorities in primary care.
  • IT skills including Word and Excel.
  • Influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Planned and organised approach to workload, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Analytical and logical thinking to resolve or escalate as appropriate.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Diplomacy, professionalism and accountability.
