About the role
Bury Council is seeking a dedicated and experienced Public Health Practitioner/Nurse (Health Protection) to join our Public Health team. This is a vital role in protecting the health and wellbeing of Bury residents by providing expert infection prevention and control (IPC) and health protection advice and supporting the management of communicable diseases across a range of settings.
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary Health Protection Team, supporting the Head of Health Protection and Consultant in Public Health in delivering a wide range of health protection activities. This includes IPC audits, outbreak response, surveillance, training, and developing local policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Provide timely and high-quality health protection, including IPC advice across health and social care, education, and community settings.
Support the prevention, investigation, and control of outbreaks of communicable diseases.
Deliver training and education on Health Protection to internal and external stakeholders.
Conduct IPC audits and support quality improvement in high-risk settings.
Contribute to the development and implementation of local IPC guidance.
Maintain accurate records and surveillance data and support the analysis of trends and risks.
Collaborate with partners including UKHSA, NHS, care providers, education settings and local businesses.
Support the management of antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections.
Assist in the delivery of public health interventions and outbreak control team meetings.
Supervise trainees and contribute to the professional development of colleagues.
Key Requirements
Registered Nurse (NMC) or equivalent healthcare professional registration.
Relevant qualification in Infection Prevention and Control (or willingness to work towards one).
Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain).
Experience in primary or secondary care and working across agencies.
Strong knowledge of IPC practices, audits, and outbreak management.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Competent in using computerised systems and maintaining surveillance databases.
Flexible, proactive, and committed to continuous professional development.
Ability to travel across the borough as required.
Immediately Responsible to: Head of Health Protection and Accountable to: Consultant in Public Health Health Protection, Healthcare Public Health, and Public Health Intelligence
Normal hours of work are 37 hours per week based around the usual business working week. Dependent on service requirements, you may be required to work on a rota basis.
