You will be responsible for transporting service users between their homes and various establishments, ensuring every journey is safe, dignified and supportive. The role goes beyond driving – you will provide practical and emotional support to passengers, particularly those with mobility difficulties, learning disabilities or behaviours that may challenge services.

You will also be responsible for:

  • Assisting passengers to and from vehicles and during journeys
  • Safely securing wheelchairs and specialist equipment
  • Carrying out daily vehicle checks and maintaining cleanliness
  • Monitoring passenger wellbeing and responding appropriately to incidents
  • Completing records and communicating with colleagues, carers and professionals
  • Supporting a flexible, responsive transport service

This is a 37-hour per week role on a split shift basis, working in a dynamic environment where flexibility is essential.

You will be part of a dedicated Transport Services team, working closely with drivers, passenger assistants, supervisors and colleagues across the wider council and partner organisations.

We pride ourselves on delivering a joined-up, person-centred service, where teamwork and communication are key.

Location: Based at Bradley Fold, delivering services across the borough and surrounding areas.

What We’re Looking For: We are seeking individuals who are reliable, patient, and dedicated to delivering high standards of care and safety.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Full UK driving licence with D1 entitlement and at least 2 years’ driving experience
  • Experience driving minibuses and transporting passengers
  • Experience supporting people with learning disabilities and/or mobility difficulties
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements and safe transport practices
  • Ability to assist passengers, including wheelchair users and those with additional needs
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with service users, carers and colleagues
  • A team-focused approach with a willingness to support service delivery
  • Flexible attitude to working hours and changing service needs

You will also need:

  • A clean driving licence
  • A satisfactory enhanced DBS check

Normal hours of work are 37 hours per week based around the usual business working week. Dependent on service requirements, you may be required to work on a rota basis.

The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff to share this commitment. Appointment may be subject to a satisfactory disclosure at the appropriate level under the Disclosure and Barring Service.

In line with safer recruitment, please ensure that your application/CV covers your full employment history and there is a reason noted for any gaps in employment. Successful candidates will be asked to provide relevant references for the past ten years and character references will not be accepted.

Please note we are unable to support with sponsorship at this time. We are committed to Bury being an equal society that recognises values and embraces all people, regardless of any difference, for the skills, abilities and experiences they bring into the workforce and the wider community. Therefore we guarantee an interview for disabled people, looked after children/care leavers, armed forces personnel (including reservists and veterans) and carers of adults or disabled children if they meet the essential criteria.

Benefits of working for Bury Council include flexible working arrangements and support for equal opportunity.
