Job Introduction

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Lecturer in Functional Skills English to join our curriculum team on a part-time 0.6 FTE contract. This is an exciting opportunity for an inspiring teacher who can engage learners from a wide range of backgrounds and starting points, helping them to develop the practical English skills they need for further study, employment and adult life. You will deliver high-quality, inclusive teaching, learning and assessment across Functional Skills English, creating a positive and supportive learning environment where every learner is encouraged and supported to achieve their potential. You will play a key role in monitoring learner progress, providing effective feedback and adapting teaching to meet individual needs. You will also contribute to the wider development of the English curriculum and the College's commitment to high-quality learner outcomes.

What you will be doing

As a Lecturer in Functional Skills English, you will:

  • Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive and high-quality Functional Skills English lessons that motivate learners and promote achievement.
  • Support learners to develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening and communicating, in line with Functional Skills English requirements.
  • Use effective formative and summative assessment to monitor learner progress, identify areas for development and inform future teaching.
  • Differentiate learning effectively to meet the needs of learners with different abilities, prior experiences and starting points.
  • Maintain accurate records of learner attendance, progress, targets, achievement and destinations.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback that enables learners to understand their progress and take responsibility for their development.
  • Develop and maintain engaging learning resources, including materials available through the College's VLE and e-learning platforms.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and respond positively to changes in Functional Skills English requirements and wider curriculum developments.
  • Reflect on your teaching practice and implement strategies to continually improve the learner experience and outcomes.
  • Provide appropriate advice and guidance to learners, including prospective and progressing students.
  • Participate in standardisation, quality assurance and internal verification activities as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the College's Self-Assessment and Quality Improvement processes.
  • Maintain your specialist subject knowledge and teaching expertise through ongoing CPD.
  • Promote and uphold the College's expectations around safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, health and safety and professional conduct.

About you

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic English teacher who understands the importance of strong literacy skills in enabling learners to progress and succeed.

You will have:

  • Relevant qualifications and experience in English, with the subject knowledge required to deliver Functional Skills English.
  • Teaching or lecturing experience, ideally within an FE, sixth form or similar educational setting.
  • Experience of teaching learners with a wide range of abilities and starting points.
  • The ability to plan and deliver engaging, accessible and inclusive learning.
  • A strong understanding of effective assessment and how to use assessment information to support learner progress.
  • A learner-centred approach and a genuine commitment to helping learners overcome barriers and build confidence.
  • A reflective approach to teaching and a commitment to continuous professional development.
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
  • A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and to treating all learners and colleagues with dignity and respect.
