Shape more inclusive places for everyone. Join Buro Happold as a Senior Inclusive Environments Consultant.

This person can be based in any of our UK locations, on a hybrid working model.

At Buro Happold, we believe the best places are designed around the people who use them.

Our Inclusive Environments team brings together accessibility, inclusive design, neuroinclusion, sensory design, stakeholder engagement and user experience to help create environments that work for the widest possible range of people.

We’re looking for a Senior Inclusive Environments Consultant to join our growing specialist team.

This is an opportunity to work on meaningful projects across the built environment, collaborating with architects, engineers, designers and clients to challenge barriers, influence design and create places that are genuinely inclusive.

We’re deliberately flexible on level and welcome people from a range of professional backgrounds.

What matters most is your passion for inclusive design, your ability to bring people and perspectives into the design process, and your desire to make a tangible difference through your work.

About The Role

As a Senior Inclusive Environments Consultant, you’ll work across a diverse portfolio of projects, helping clients and design teams embed inclusive thinking from strategy through to detailed design.

Our work spans workplaces, education, culture, transport, sport, healthcare and major urban developments, with projects across the UK and internationally.

You could be undertaking accessibility audits one day, facilitating stakeholder engagement the next, and working alongside a multidisciplinary design team to develop practical inclusive design solutions.

Depending on your experience, you’ll have the opportunity to support senior colleagues on complex projects, lead defined workstreams, or take responsibility for project delivery and client relationships.

This is a role where your expertise can directly influence how people experience the built environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake inclusive design reviews, accessibility reviews and audits across a range of project scales, typologies and locations.
  • Advise clients and design teams on accessibility, inclusive design, neuroinclusion, sensory design and user experience.
  • Act as a trusted voice for clients, representing Buro Happold confidently in meetings, workshops and design reviews.
  • Prepare clear, practical reports, recommendations and guidance that translate complex issues into actionable solutions.
  • Support and deliver stakeholder engagement activities with diverse user groups.
  • Work collaboratively with architects, engineers, designers, clients and other stakeholders to develop inclusive design solutions.
  • Contribute to presentations, workshops, meetings and project discussions.
  • Depending on your level, lead workstreams, manage projects and develop client relationships.
  • Support business development activities, bids, thought leadership and knowledge sharing.
  • Manage your time effectively across a varied portfolio of projects and sectors.
  • Contribute to the growth, reputation and creative culture of our Inclusive Environments team.

About You

We’re more interested in finding the right person than a perfect CV.

You may have a background in inclusive design, accessibility, architecture, engineering, planning, engagement, research or another related built environment discipline.

You’ll bring

  • A genuine passion for inclusive design and creating environments that work for diverse users.
  • Experience or knowledge within the built environment, design, accessibility, engagement, user research or a related field.
  • A strong understanding of accessibility standards, legislation and inclusive design principles.
  • The ability to turn complex issues into clear, practical advice for clients and project teams.
  • Confidence working collaboratively with clients, design teams and a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to act as a trusted and credible adviser.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with curiosity and a willingness to keep learning.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities across varied projects.
  • An interest in developing specialist expertise in areas such as accessibility, neuroinclusion, sensory design, user experience or stakeholder engagement.
  • For candidates operating at Senior Consultant level, experience of leading projects, managing client relationships and guiding teams towards successful outcomes will be particularly valuable.
  • Professional accreditation, such as NRAC membership, would be advantageous but is not essential.

We’re committed to supporting your professional development and helping you build your expertise and specialisms.
