Join our Leeds-based Building Services team at a pivotal moment as we lead the next wave of sustainable, high-profile engineering projects. We’re delighted to be recruiting an Electrical Engineer to join our growing Building Environments team at BuroHappold. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a background in Building Services who is keen to contribute to industry-leading designs within a vibrant, collaborative, multi-disciplinary practice based in Leeds.

As an Electrical Engineer, you will immerse yourself in a diverse portfolio of engaging and dynamic projects across the UK and internationally, delivering innovative solutions for high-profile developments that shape the built environment and push the boundaries of sustainable design.

Projects we are working on:

  • Heritage Retrofits with a Modern Twist – breathing new life into historic landmarks such as the Great Yarmouth Winter Gardens, a 120-year-old Grade II* listed glasshouse.
  • Sports Sector Developments – world-class training facilities and stadium expansions for Premier League and Premiership rugby teams, including the Leeds United Stadium Expansion.
  • Transformative Commercial and Residential Schemes – major developments like York Central, a masterplan featuring hotels, offices and residential blocks with a strong focus on sustainability and community impact.
  • Prestigious International Projects – landmark schemes in KSA and Dubai, providing opportunities to work on globally recognised developments.

Key Duties:

  • Deliver detailed electrical building services designs and calculations using tools such as Revit and ProDesign, supported by hand calculations.
  • Manage design delivery from concept through all RIBA stages, producing coordinated models, drawings and specifications to meet programme, quality and budget requirements.
  • Design LV distribution, emergency systems and lighting in compliance with UK codes and standards (including BS7671) while aligning with energy-efficiency and carbon-reduction goals.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, schedules and specifications; actively contribute to design reviews and quality-assurance processes.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs, respond promptly to RFIs and design queries, ensuring seamless collaboration across teams.
  • Support site activities including submittals, FAT/SAT, witnessing and technical queries to enable safe, timely installation and energisation.
  • Represent BuroHappold in client, supplier and design-team meetings; mentor junior engineers and promote knowledge-sharing within the team.
  • Embrace new technologies and approaches that enhance performance, sustainability and progress toward net-zero carbon targets.
  • Contribute to project value, including supporting aspects of financial management alongside project leads.
  • Actively engage in team discussions, events and seminars, supporting a collaborative and knowledge-sharing culture.
  • Maintain CPD and ongoing professional development, while mentoring junior engineers, interns and trainees, with potential for early line-management responsibilities.

Essential Experience & Skills:

  • Demonstrable experience in electrical building services engineering (consultancy or similar).
  • Proven design delivery across project stages with high-quality outputs (calculations, reports, specifications and schedules).
  • Proficiency with ProDesign/Amtech (Trimble), ReLux/Dialux and the ability to review and amend designs in AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Knowledge of UK codes and standards including BS7671 and CDM; awareness of design risk management.
  • Strong communication and proactive problem-solving; collaborative, client-facing approach.
  • BEng/BSc or MEng/MSc in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline).

Desirable Experience & Skills:

  • Experience with large public assembly buildings (stadia/arenas) and heritage retrofits.
  • Power quality and harmonics mitigation; HV interfaces, UPS and generator sizing and control.
  • ETAP/PowerFactory exposure; digital engineering skills and willingness to learn new analysis tools.
  • Working toward or holding IEng/CEng with CIBSE/IET.
