Buro Happold is recruiting for an Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our Building Environments team in Cambridge. This role is suited to a candidate from a buildings background looking for an opportunity to pursue industry leading designs within a vibrant multi-disciplinary practice. The successful applicant will lead MEP projects, input to and assist with leading the mechanical team on projects in the Cambridge area and further afield, including Higher Educational buildings, research facilities, mixed-use developments, and refurbishments including heritage buildings.
We are ideally looking for a versatile candidate who wants to play an active role in technical delivery, project management, mentorship/line management, and business development. You will be collaborating with a wider UK MEP team of over 125 Engineers and Technicians and drawing upon the diverse skills and knowledge of other connected disciplines, including sustainability, building physics, fire engineering, facades, lighting, technology, and more. This role offers a wide breadth of technical exposure and the opportunity to push the boundaries of sustainable design and join a CIBSE award-winning team renowned for achieving outstanding building performance.
This role will challenge you technically and creatively on some of the most interesting developments in the Cambridge area and beyond. Teamwork and a collaborative approach are key to any project at Buro Happold, so strong communication skills and a passion to succeed with others will serve you well. This key role will have a variety of day-to-day responsibilities including:
- Leading the delivery of projects, including single and multi-disciplinary offerings
- Communicating directly with clients, offering innovative design solutions and managing expectations
- Further developing relationships with existing and new clients including contractors, architects and developers
- Preparing technical and financial proposals for new work
- Managing workload of engineers and technicians
- Preparing technical specifications
- Monitoring financial performance of jobs and setting up/managing job/project administrative systems, including planning and monitoring job resourcing/expenditure
Skills & Experience:
- Extensive mechanical design experience in an MEP consultancy, with experience acting as project leader
- Strong sector knowledge relevant to the Cambridge market, ideally including Higher Education, Science and Technology, decarbonisation and mixed-use developments
- Strong interpersonal and organisational skills, able to develop relationships with clients, architects and other team members
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering
- Professionally registered with a relevant institution (e.g. CIBSE, IMechE, etc.)
- Although mechanically biased, a good understanding of other design disciplines is expected
- A Bachelor’s degree (BEng/BSc) or Master’s degree (MEng/MSc) in a relevant discipline
