Buro Happold is best known for delivering some of the most iconic and inspiring projects worldwide. We are recruiting a Degree apprenticeship to join our friendly and innovative London Structures team, who are involved in a wide variety of challenging and exciting projects. This apprenticeship is in partnership with London Southbank University. Our management team includes qualified professional engineers who learnt, developed and became qualified through the apprenticeship route. Many engineers who decide to progress through the apprenticeship route find that working during the day on projects whilst attending part-time study provides invaluable experience and enables a work-focused programme of learning delivering increased technical skills and behaviours that are invaluable for their career.
Within your team, you will be guided by your line manager and colleagues within a strong collaborative ethos that will enable you to develop your engineering understanding, knowledge and skills by working on a broad range of projects. There are also wider groups such as the Young Employees Forum (YEF) for those at an early stage of their career which provides a wider peer network across the many design, advisory and consulting disciplines that is Buro Happold. The YEF not only organises professional development events but has a wider focus on encouraging participation in voluntary activities and social events.
For more information on the Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship, starting salary on offer is £28,500 plus additional benefits. Benefit highlights include 25 days holiday and early finish on the last Friday of the month, cycle-to-work, and other competitive benefits.
Within our Structures team, we develop the strategies and designs for the structures needed to support the built environment. As part of Buro Happold’s Structures team you will develop your knowledge and skills to:
- Undertake detailed structural engineering design.
- Prepare technical schedules.
- Plan and manage CAD documentation of design work.
- Under guidance of senior staff, represent Buro Happold at meetings with the client, other professionals and suppliers.
- Ensure service and project work are carried out within agreed deadlines and within budget.
- Ensure that appropriate service/design decisions are met.
- Ensure senior staff are kept informed of important and relevant service/design decisions and the objectives of the company and the client are achieved.
Within both teams, you would be expected to:
- Ensure service and project work are carried out to an excellent standard - within agreed deadlines and within budget.
- Prepare technical specifications and schedules, design development reports and innovative design solutions.
- Plan and manage input to Computer Aided Design programmes for production of design work.
- Assist in the management of projects complying with Buro Happold project management procedures.
- Represent the company as part of a team attending design team meetings or meetings with clients and other design team professionals.
Good IT skills and the ability to learn and use software, you will have the opportunity to learn programmes such as 3D BIM (i.e. Autodesk Revit), visual programming (i.e. Python, Dynamo and Grasshopper), and structural analysis and design software.
Great communication skills and a team-oriented outlook (ability to work in a team environment).
Confident, enthusiastic, proactive and 'can do' attitude.
A positive and inquisitive approach and the confidence to ask and respond to challenging questions.
Willingness to develop personally and acquire new skills.
One of the following:
- A Level BBC - Must include Mathematics and preferably a Science in either Chemistry or Physics (UCAS points: 112).
- T-level (Merit or above) in Construction: Design, Surveying And Planning. (UCAS points: 120).
- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma DDM in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. (UCAS points: 128).
- BTEC Level 3 National Diploma D*D* in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. (UCAS points: 112).
- Civil Engineering Technician level 3 apprenticeship DD (UCAS points: 96) alongside grade Pass or Distinction at EPA to check.
This role is for a September 2025 start, subject to enrolment deadlines and guidelines from London Southbank University.
