Staff Mechanical Engineer – Mission Critical (London, UK)
Burns & McDonnell is looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our UK Mission Critical team in London. The role involves working on high-tech building design and construction projects, initially data centres and telecommunications facilities, with potential expansion to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, manufacturing, airports, or institutional facilities.
Responsibilities
- Advise clients regarding mechanical systems and requirements to meet their needs and comply with safety codes.
- Design mechanical systems/equipment to meet client requirements.
- Develop design criteria for air and water side building mechanical systems.
- Peer review mechanical designs and specifications of equipment or systems.
- Develop concept studies and designs; provide written system options and write specifications for mechanical systems.
- Coordinate with other disciplines including Architect and Structures; enforce standards and practices.
- Prepare calculations and technical/equipment specification documentation; monitor installation to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety codes.
- Contribute to health & safety compliance and prepare associated safety documentation.
- Client-facing activities, including attending meetings, leading presentations, and managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Participate in work-winning activities and assist with bid-stage technical solutions; support future business opportunities and Burns & McDonnell brand elevation.
- Engage in personal professional development and involvement in professional bodies and industry groups.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Building Services engineering from an accredited program (equivalent qualifications may be considered).
- Minimum of 3 years of related mechanical design experience.
- Knowledge of mechanical design principles, standards, and codes.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.
- Data centre or telecommunications facility experience and knowledge of critical facility mechanical design.
- Experience at concept design level to assist with the development of data centre master plans.
- Ability to write specifications for mechanical equipment, devices, and materials.
- Familiarity with other building systems and coordination with those systems and components.
- IT literacy with good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Membership of relevant industry body (e.g., CIBSE, IMechE).
