Senior Mechanical Engineer – Energy & Power (Multiple Locations, UK)
Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with design development, owners engineer and EPC experience to join our UK team. You will contribute to power and energy transition projects across the UK and international regions, including technologies such as energy storage systems (BESS), heat networks, and distributed heat and power as part of the pathway to 2050 Net Zero.
You will lead mechanical design project teams to deliver world-class designs for new projects, upgrades and redevelopments across the power and energy sectors, and may support other Burns & McDonnell business lines as needed. You will guide the project team through design and construction, adapting mechanical plans to budget, design factors and client needs.
Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design from conceptual phase through design completion to meet project needs and requirements as defined by project managers.
- Prepare mechanical equipment specifications, data sheets, RFQs, technical bid summaries and purchase recommendations.
- Review mechanical equipment vendor drawings; interface data with suppliers, clients and other engineering disciplines, detailers and designers.
- Support development of project schedule, scope, budget and staffing; manage change orders effectively.
- Apply expert knowledge of mechanical concepts, practices, codes and procedures within the mechanical engineering services industry.
- Apply knowledge to complex projects and develop non-standard design solutions.
- Quality-review production drawings and project data across CAD software; ensure corrections are made.
- Coordinate construction administration, field inspections, calculations, and testing of mechanical systems in collaboration with field personnel.
- Lead field inspections, installation measurements or calculations for clients.
- Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
- Build relationships with clients, customers and contractors; support customer satisfaction and pursue new business opportunities.
- Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
- Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to meet targets and standards for financial performance.
- Prepare and present project budgets and cost estimates; report project performance.
- Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the mechanical engineering practice; mentor less experienced engineers.
- Ensure QA/QC process adherence and effective communication with other engineering disciplines.
- Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 7 years mechanical engineering experience.
- Professional Engineering License (PE) preferred.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE) and standard engineering techniques.
- Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience leading discipline design for large projects and delegating tasks; ability to lead execution and resolve issues in a team environment.
- Strong critical thinking, analytical problem-solving and attention to detail.
- Facilitation, collaboration, organization and teamwork skills; ability to perform quality reviews of detailed engineering documents.
- Willingness to travel.
