The position reports to the Sr. Field Operations Manager and provides consistent leadership across multiple projects and sites, verifying standards, capability, and performance are applied uniformly across the UK region such that the planned work is delivered safely and on time; and monitoring that performance meets recognised standards of productivity, quality and compliance with essential health and safety provisions.

Responsibilities

  • Line manager for Site operations staff.
  • Understand Company Health & Safety and Environmental (SHE) Policies and Processes and statutory requirements and ensure implementation.
  • Manage compliance with CDM regulations on site.
  • Attend project sites as required.
  • Act as onsite support/supervision or temporary site manager as defined by national procedures.
  • Lead and motivate a team of employees and contractors to deliver all aspects of onsite project delivery.
  • Produce roster for staff under management.
  • Resource suitably competent staff to deliver site works.
  • Undertake detailed site visits.
  • Produce reports or provide information in a timely manner.
  • Attend and cascade briefings as directed.
  • Liaise with customers, clients, local authorities and other interested third parties regarding works.
  • Provide sufficient and timely supervision, assessment and coaching to ensure staff and sub‑contractors meet agreed production levels.
  • Maintain own levels of skill and knowledge to do the job effectively.
  • Perform other duties as directed by manager.
  • Comply with the relevant Company HSQE and welfare policy provisions.
  • Support clients and ensure all agreed KPIs are met or exceeded.
  • Ensure operative records are accurate and up to date.
  • Provide operational and functional management advice on application of Environmental policies and processes.
  • Assist investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses.
  • Promote best practice, capture best practice and feed back into business.
  • Set standards and lead by example in health, safety, quality & environmental management.
  • Contribute to project tender submission: writing and reviewing Construction Methodology Statements; support planner in construction phase of programme; contribute to production and review of site and construction procedures.
  • Responsible for recruitment, development, training and retention of staff; conduct performance evaluations; provide leadership, guidance and instruction; interpret policies; verify adherence to QA/QC processes.
  • Enforce compliance with company and site safety policies; lead diversity initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, complying with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of Level Voltage (Lv) and High Voltage (Hv) systems.
  • Understanding of client transmission procedures and engineering drawings.
  • Minimum of 5 years site management of HV substation construction.
  • Strong substation construction knowledge.
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) in Construction Management, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • National Grid competencies: SR163, NSI 6 & 8 Full, IOSHH Managing Safety, IOSH Environmental, CSCS for Managers & Professionals, Impressed Voltage Training, Temporary Works Coordinator or Supervisor experience, CDM Regulations, Waste Management, SMSTS, HSG47, NEBOSH General/Construction Certificate (desirable), OEM knowledge.
  • Computer‑literate, good knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent organisational, communication and time‑management skills; can work on own initiative.
  • Ability to lead and motivate people; strong interpersonal, communication and influence skills.
  • Commercial awareness; understanding the effect of site activities on the project's financial performance.
  • Experience providing operational management advice to external stakeholders.
