The Civils Technical Excellence Manager is responsible for establishing consistency and direction in our technical groups through leadership, direction, and oversight of the technical staff. The primary mission is to provide engineering leadership and direction to the Burns & McDonnell Transmission & Distribution civils team in order to position Burns & McDonnell as a leading company in the Transmission & Distribution field. The Technical Manager will support the organisation by establishing market trends and opportunities and providing direction for annual goals to improve technical excellence.

The position will, at the direction of the T&D Regional Operations Director, support the Burns & McDonnell T&D vision, mission and values including the development of market specific business, strategies, long-term client relationships and promotion of a successful team-orientated environment. The additional mission for the Technical Manager is to foster a culture where technical excellence is valued, recognised, and rewarded for the importance it brings to the organisation.

  • Leadership of the UK Civils technical delivery, competence and professional excellence for the entire discipline, UK and International.
  • Working closely with the Civils Section Manager to assemble suitable civils engineering personnel from across our global offices to deliver UK projects.
  • Support with resource planning to ensure that suitably experienced and capable resource to undertake the primary disciple input to substation projects through interaction with the Civil Structural Section Manager, Engineering Director, Planners, Design Managers, other Technical Excellence Managers and the design team.
  • Identifying and resolving any constraints to delivery.
  • Provide sector expertise, as required, to all other departments within the company.
  • Support the T&D Operations Director in identifying, directing and implementing business strategies, including operational, marketing, pricing, sales and customer retention strategies.
  • Undertaking senior technical roles on project-specific multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Being a senior technical authority on civil and structural engineering, as it relates to power T&D infrastructure (electricity substations, overhead lines, and high voltage underground cables), within the wider company.
  • Growing and enhancing the Civil/Structural Section engineering capability in the UK business.
  • Leadership responsibility for the technical competence of the civils and structural UK team technical development, competence management, and career path support within the Civil/Structural Section.
  • Assume recruitment responsibility, reviewing CVs, interviewing, preparing recruitment documentation, and on-boarding new recruits into the UK civil and structural teams.
  • Leadership of the technical quality of outputs for the Civils and Structural design team.
  • Ensuring that the design meets customer standards, specifications, Eurocodes, British Standards, and good industry practice standards.
  • Be a lead technical person for civil and structural engineering work packages relating to electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure.
  • Where appropriate and required, Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE), as defined by National Grid’s TP137 procedure, or equivalent role as defined by other clients.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to the Burns & McDonnell Substations team based in BMI, Mumbai, India.
  • Supporting the BMI Civil and Structural Department Manager with the recruitment of UK team members based in Mumbai.
  • Providing technical leadership of engineering input to bids and work winning for the discipline.
  • Development of Innovation within the substation's civils design/delivery team improving methods of working to improve safety, reduce design costs, construction costs/time, and improving efficiency.
  • Development of team competence criteria.
  • Ensure the section’s technical ability is maintained at a professional level and manage training, development, and recruitment for the team.
  • Support the Civil Structural Section Manager to monitor the performance of staff through Performance Reviews and lead Performance Management where required.
  • Understand, maintain and apply company QA policy and procedures.
  • Drive the introduction of advanced techniques for design delivery for the discipline.
  • Maintain compliance to CDM Regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of the design undertaken.
  • Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval/sign-off, as required, on civil and structural engineering designs.
  • Maintain technical compliance to applicable Burns & McDonnell and client design management standards, processes, and procedures on all work delivered by Civil/Structural Section staff.
  • Develop and implement policies, processes, procedures, standards, and technical guidance, as required to continually improve the engineering capability within the Civil/Structural Section.
  • Act as Principal Designer representative, as defined by UK Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, where required.
  • Provide technical leadership in the approach to the preparation of project proposals and lead tender presentations.
  • Drive ‘Safety by Design’ approach on all projects, at all times.
  • Support nurturing of safety and technical excellence culture through an emphasis on staff competence, diligence, and responsible attitude.
  • Maintain project compliance to Burns & McDonnell’s UK Integrated Management System.
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be asked of this position by Senior Management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in related field from an accredited institution and 7 years of related professional experience Required.
  • Demonstrated technical ability internally and externally.
  • Proven leadership in developing and implementing vision that has brought positive impact.
  • Demonstrated excellent written & verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
