The Champions Mentor works to develop professional and supportive relationships with young people and engage them through session delivery and long-term mentoring. The role aims to provide a programme of early intervention, mentoring and support for identified young people to guide them away from negative behaviour and its associated outcomes.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Working with Individuals and Groups: Work with individuals and groups from a wide range of backgrounds and communities. Adapt communication and delivery styles to suit diverse needs and learning preferences. Build positive, trusting relationships that encourage engagement and participation.
- Mentoring and Programme Delivery: Mentor young people on a one-to-one basis through sessions delivered in community settings such as Schools and the Leisure Box. Support delivery of the Champions Programme initiatives, ensuring sessions are engaging and accessible. Provide guidance, motivation and encouragement to help young people meet personal goals.
- Record Keeping and Monitoring: Keep accurate files, records and evidence relating to all programme activities. Produce high-quality output evidence to support monitoring, evaluation and reporting requirements. Ensure all programme information is consistently recorded using the VIEWS monitoring system.
- Performance and Accountability: Be accountable for achieving agreed outcomes, outputs and personal or team targets. Monitor progress and proactively identify areas for improvement. Contribute to continuous service development through feedback and reflective practice.
- Professional Development: Attend workshops, conferences and relevant training opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills. Stay updated on sector developments, best practice and community needs. Share learning with colleagues to support team development.
- Partnership and Community Engagement: Proactively develop links with local organisations and diverse community groups. Build partnerships that support collaborative working and expand programme reach. Engage with community stakeholders to identify opportunities for joint initiatives.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with Lancashire Police and other key stakeholders. Target specific areas and groups to promote community offers and increase participation. Maintain effective communication channels to support partnership goals.
- Representation and Meetings: Represent Burnley FC in the Community at multi-agency meetings and panels. Contribute insights, updates and relevant case information to support joint decision-making. Build positive relationships with external partners on behalf of the organisation.
- Marketing and Promotion: Liaise with the marketing department to ensure all programmes are promoted effectively. Support the creation of promotional materials through varied communication methods. Provide accurate information to help raise awareness and increase visibility of services.
- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: Consider equality, diversity and inclusion across all Social Inclusion activities. Focus specifically on improving engagement among females, LGBTQ young people, disabled individuals and ethnically diverse communities. Ensure programmes are accessible, inclusive and reflective of community needs.
- Safeguarding Responsibilities: Actively promote safeguarding within all programmes. Maintain a strong understanding of safeguarding principles and reporting procedures. Contribute to creating safe environments for all participants.
- Risk Management and Safety: Ensure all programmes and activities are correctly monitored and documented. Complete appropriate risk assessments and adhere to safeguarding and health & safety procedures. Identify and mitigate potential risks to maintain safe operational standards.
- General: Understand and implement the Charity’s Safeguarding policy, procedures, and best practice guidelines in your role. Use this understanding to ensure safe working practices, appropriate reporting of concerns and contribute positively to a safe environment. Work towards agreed objectives. Comply with all Charity policies. Promote the Burnley FC in the Community brand and ethos in a professional, strong, and positive manner. Work alongside other team members to support in other areas of the organisation as and when required to promote best practice. Hold a commitment to equality and diversity in the workplace. Willingness to attend training courses to enhance own professional development. Always demonstrate the Charity’s values.
Essential Qualifications, Experience & Skills:
- Mentoring, Counselling or Youth Work qualification(s) at L3 or above.
- Full, valid UK driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle.
- Experience of mentoring individuals over long periods of time.
- Experience of working with vulnerable young people within a youth work, education or custodial environment.
- Ability to motivate, inspire and mentor people towards achieving their goals.
- Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with a range of partners.
- Knowledge and experience of safeguarding requirements when working with young people and vulnerable adults.
- Ability to monitor, evaluate and assess project performance.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.
- Excellent IT skills including intermediate abilities in all MS Office programmes.
- Time management skills to be able to plan and regulate workload including the ability to prioritise demands and thrive under pressure.
