About the Role

As we continue to expand our data and AI capabilities, we're looking for a Data & AI Governance Lead to establish and drive best-in-class governance practices across our UK Insurance business. This is a unique opportunity to take ownership of both Data Governance and Responsible AI Governance, ensuring that data and AI are managed responsibly, ethically and in line with regulatory requirements while enabling innovation and business value. Reporting to the Head of Applied AI & Data Operations, you'll work with senior leaders across Data & Analytics, Technology, Risk, Legal, Compliance and the wider business to build a culture of accountability, trust and effective governance. Initially an individual contributor role, this position offers the opportunity to shape and lead a future governance team.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead Data Governance Own and implement Data Governance policies, standards and controls across UK Insurance. Establish governance frameworks that support effective management of critical data assets. Develop practical governance operating models that embed compliance throughout the data lifecycle. Define governance requirements for new products, platforms and AI-enabled capabilities.
  • Drive Data Risk & Control Assurance Identify, assess and manage data-related risks. Oversee governance controls covering data quality, classification, retention, access management, lineage and third-party data usage. Lead governance assurance reviews, control assessments and remediation activities. Support internal audits, regulatory reviews and compliance initiatives.
  • Champion Responsible AI Lead the implementation of Bupa's Responsible AI Framework. Chair the High-Risk AI Committee and oversee assessments of high-risk AI initiatives. Ensure AI solutions are compliant, secure, ethical and aligned with evolving regulations. Monitor developments in GDPR, the EU AI Act and the broader AI regulatory landscape.
  • Influence and Engage Build strong partnerships across technical and business teams. Support Data Owners and Data Stewards in fulfilling governance responsibilities. Deliver governance reporting, dashboards and metrics for senior stakeholders. Promote a culture of responsible data and AI usage across the organisation.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in talented governance professionals who bring a blend of strategic thinking, technical understanding and stakeholder influence.

  • Significant experience in Data Governance, Data Management, Data Risk, AI Governance or a related discipline.
  • Experience implementing governance frameworks, controls and assurance processes.
  • Proven experience managing governance and risk within regulated environments such as Insurance, Financial Services, Banking or Healthcare.
  • Knowledge of governance frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK, DCAM or similar.
  • Experience supporting audits, regulatory reviews and compliance activities.
  • Experience implementing Responsible AI principles, governance frameworks or model risk controls.
  • You'll Also Have Strong understanding of data quality, metadata, lineage and data lifecycle management.
  • Knowledge of governance technologies including data catalogues, metadata and data quality platforms.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • The ability to influence senior leaders and drive organisational change.
  • Relevant certifications such as CDMP, DCAM, CISA, CRISC or CGEIT are advantageous.
