Role Overview
The Depot Manager is responsible for the effective management of the traffic management depot, ensuring that the procurement, maintenance, storage, and availability of all temporary traffic management equipment is managed to an efficient and compliant standard.
This role is accountable for maintaining high standards of health and safety across the depot, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory, and company requirements, and preparing the business for successful health and safety audits.
The Depot Manager provides leadership across all depot activities, ensuring equipment is fit for purpose, safely stored, inspected, maintained, and readily available to support operational delivery.
The Depot Manager oversees day-to-day depot and yard operations, driving efficiency, continuous improvement, and operational readiness. They are responsible for the effective management, development, and performance of depot personnel, including the direct line management of yard operatives and associated support staff.
This includes setting clear expectations, monitoring performance, supporting training and development, managing attendance, and ensuring operatives operate safely and effectively. The Depot Manager is responsible for approving operative timesheets, ensuring hours worked, overtime, and any additional requirements are accurately recorded and submitted in line with company procedures.
The role plays a critical part in maintaining a positive safety culture, promoting accountability, ensuring compliance, and supporting the successful delivery of traffic management operations through effective people, equipment, and resource management.
Strategic Leadership
- Operational Leadership: Provides visible leadership across all depot activities, ensuring high standards of safety, compliance, housekeeping and operational performance are consistently achieved.
- Decision Making: Makes informed decisions relating to equipment availability, stock control, procurement, maintenance priorities and resource allocation to maximise operational efficiency and business performance.
- Problem Solving & Critical Thinking: Identifies operational challenges and implements practical solutions that improve depot performance, reduce downtime and minimise disruption to operational delivery.
- Attention to Detail: Maintains accurate asset records, inspection regimes, maintenance schedules and compliance documentation, ensuring all equipment remains fit for purpose and audit compliant.
- Adaptability: Responds effectively to changing operational priorities, customer requirements and business demands, ensuring depot activities continue to support service delivery.
- Communication: Communicates effectively with operational teams, planners, managers and depot personnel, ensuring expectations, priorities and safety requirements are clearly understood and consistently applied.
- Leadership & Motivation: Creates a positive, accountable working environment by leading through example, recognising good performance and encouraging continuous improvement, teamwork and personal responsibility.
Organisational Development
- Collaboration: Works collaboratively with Operations, Planning, Compliance, Procurement and Fleet teams to ensure equipment, resources and logistics support the successful delivery of contracts.
- Continuous Improvement: Reviews depot processes and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, enhance stock management and strengthen operational controls.
- Resource Planning: Ensures appropriate stock levels, equipment availability and workforce resources are maintained to meet current and future operational requirements.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Risk Management: Proactively identifies, assesses and mitigates operational, safety and environmental risks, ensuring robust controls are implemented across all depot activities.
- Compliance: Ensures full compliance with company procedures, Health & Safety legislation, environmental requirements and all relevant industry standards relating to Temporary Traffic Management equipment and depot operations.
- Health, Safety & Environment: Maintains a safe working environment through effective supervision, regular inspections, risk assessments and safe systems of work, promoting a culture where safety is everyone's responsibility.
- Audit & Assurance: Maintains depot readiness for internal and external audits by ensuring documentation, equipment records, maintenance schedules and statutory requirements are consistently maintained to the required standard.
Operations & Systems
- Depot & Asset Management: Maintains comprehensive knowledge of Temporary Traffic Management equipment, asset management, inspection regimes, procurement processes, maintenance requirements and logistics to ensure operational readiness.
- Stock Control: Maintains accurate stock records, monitors inventory levels and ensures equipment is available, serviceable and correctly allocated to operational requirements.
- Operational Systems: Demonstrates strong ICT capability, using REPS and other business systems to manage stock, equipment records, maintenance schedules and operational reporting.
- Logistics & Operational Support: Coordinates equipment movements and depot activities to ensure operational teams receive the correct equipment, in the correct condition, at the required time.
People Development
- Culture: Promotes a professional, inclusive and safety-focused culture where company values, behaviours and standards are consistently demonstrated.
- Performance Management: Sets clear expectations, monitors individual performance, manages attendance and supports employees through regular feedback, coaching and performance reviews.
- Training & Development: Ensures depot personnel maintain the required competence through effective induction, ongoing training and development, supporting succession planning and continuous professional development.
- Employee Engagement: Builds a motivated and engaged team by encouraging collaboration, recognising achievement and creating opportunities for individuals to develop their skills and contribute to business success.
Monday to Friday (50hrs per week).
Salaryupto £55,000.00 per annum to be discussed at interview stage
The successful candidate would be subject to a 6 month probationary period.
