We are currently recruiting on behalf of our client for an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support the delivery of major power and energy infrastructure projects across the Birmingham region and wider UK network. This is a fantastic opportunity for a developing QS to gain hands-on experience within a high-profile energy programme, working alongside experienced commercial professionals on complex infrastructure schemes.
The Opportunity
As Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial management of substation, overhead line, and associated energy infrastructure projects, gaining valuable exposure to NEC contract environments and large-scale utilities delivery. You will work closely with Senior Quantity Surveyors and Commercial Managers, developing your technical and commercial skills while contributing to live project delivery from pre-construction through to final account. This role offers a hybrid working arrangement (2 days per week on site in Birmingham), providing a strong balance between site exposure and office-based development.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the commercial management of power and energy infrastructure projects
- Assist in preparing and maintaining cost plans, budgets, and forecasts
- Support cost reporting, valuation, and financial tracking across live projects
- Assist with administration of NEC contracts (particularly NEC Option C exposure desirable)
- Support the management of Compensation Events and change control processes
- Assist with subcontractor accounts including payments, variations, and final accounts
- Support procurement activities including tender preparation and evaluation
- Help identify and manage commercial risks and opportunities
- Produce accurate and timely commercial reports and project documentation
- Work collaboratively with engineers, project managers, and commercial teams
About You
- Some experience in a Quantity Surveying or commercial role within construction or infrastructure
- Exposure to power, utilities, or civil engineering projects (desirable)
- Basic understanding of NEC contracts (essential or strong interest in developing)
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Good communication and teamworking ability
- Eagerness to learn and develop within a fast-paced project environment
- Competent in Microsoft Office
- Degree or HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying or related discipline (or working towards)
