Overview
We are recruiting for an experienced Freelance Design Manager to join a Tier 1 main contractor delivering a major £50m+ education project in Mansfield. This is a long-term contract opportunity, offering involvement in a high-profile, technically complex scheme from construction phase through to completion. The role is expected to run for approximately 2 years, providing excellent continuity of work.
The Role
As Design Manager, you will play a key role in coordinating and managing the design process, ensuring information is delivered on time, within programme requirements, and aligned with buildability, cost and quality expectations. You will work closely with project delivery teams, consultants, subcontractors and the client to ensure the design is fully coordinated and supports efficient project delivery.
Responsibilities
- Managing and coordinating the design process throughout the construction phase
- Liaising with consultants, subcontractors and internal teams to ensure design information is delivered to programme
- Reviewing and managing design deliverables to ensure buildability, compliance and cost efficiency
- Leading design team meetings and driving design progress
- Identifying and resolving technical and coordination issues
- Managing design change control and ensuring all revisions are communicated effectively
- Supporting project teams with technical input and value engineering opportunities
- Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and client specifications
About You
- Proven experience working as a Design Manager for a main contractor
- Strong track record delivering large-scale commercial or education projects
- Experience working on projects of £50m+ value preferred
- Strong understanding of construction methodologies and design coordination
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple design packages and drive programme delivery
- Comfortable working within a Tier 1 contractor environment
