The Opportunity

We are working with a leading UK main contractor who are looking to appoint an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team. The business has an excellent reputation for delivering high-quality commercial, industrial and mixed-use developments, working across both new-build and refurbishment projects. This is a fully remote position, offering an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Assistant QS to develop their career within an established and growing main contractor. Ideally, candidates will be based in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire or Cambridgeshire, although applications from candidates further afield will also be considered.

The Role

Working closely with the Senior Quantity Surveyor and wider commercial team, you will support the successful commercial management of a range of construction projects from pre-construction through to completion. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with the commercial management of projects from inception through to completion.
  • Supporting the preparation and management of project budgets, forecasts and cost reports.
  • Assisting with valuations, applications for payment and final accounts.
  • Supporting the procurement and management of subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Reviewing and managing subcontractor accounts and payments.
  • Assisting with variations, change control and the assessment of costs.
  • Monitoring project expenditure and identifying commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Supporting the Senior QS with commercial reporting and forecasting.
  • Working closely with the project delivery team to ensure commercial targets are achieved.
  • Developing strong relationships with clients, subcontractors and suppliers.

About You

The ideal candidate will be an Assistant Quantity Surveyor with experience working within a main contractor environment and a genuine desire to progress their career. You will ideally have:

  • Experience working on construction projects, preferably within commercial, industrial or mixed-use sectors.
  • Experience across new-build and/or refurbishment projects.
  • A good understanding of construction contracts and commercial processes.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a wider team.
  • A proactive approach and a desire to develop professionally.
  • Relevant Quantity Surveying or commercial qualification, or be working towards one, would be advantageous.
