About the company
Our client is the turnkey design and build fit out company — an award-winning, integrated design, project management and construction company specialising in the commercial fit-out market. Working with clients ranging from ambitious scale-ups to global blue-chip organisations, our client takes projects from initial brief all the way through to handover, delivering inspiring workplaces that are built on time, within budget and to the highest quality standard.
As our client continues to grow its project pipeline and reputation, we are looking for an exceptional Head of Construction to lead our site delivery function. This is a senior leadership role for someone who combines deep technical expertise with the commercial acumen and people skills to drive a high-performing construction team.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Directors, the Head of Construction will have overall accountability for the delivery of all live projects — from pre-construction planning through to practical completion and aftercare handover. You will be the custodian of the companies construction standards, culture and client relationships on site, ensuring every project is a reference-quality example of what we do.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Delivery: Lead the end-to-end construction delivery of multiple concurrent design and build fit-out projects across London and the South East, typically ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 sq ft. Oversee the full site lifecycle — from pre-start mobilisation and sequencing through to defects resolution and project close-out. Ensure all projects are delivered on programme, within budget and to quality benchmarks, with no compromise on client expectations. Drive a seven-stage assessment process that maintains consistent delivery standards and early identification of risk across the project portfolio.
- Leadership & Team Management: Build, manage and mentor a team of Site Managers, Project Managers and Site Supervisors, fostering a culture of accountability, pride and continuous improvement. Set clear performance expectations, conduct regular reviews and actively develop the capability of the construction team. Collaborate closely with the design, commercial and pre-construction teams to ensure a seamless handover from design to delivery. Act as a visible, hands-on leader on site — known and respected by clients, consultants and supply chain partners alike.
- Commercial & Financial Management: Partner with the commercial team to manage project budgets, variations, valuations and final accounts, maintaining healthy project margins throughout. Review and challenge subcontractor programmes, procurement schedules and package scopes to identify efficiencies without compromising quality. Monitor project P&L and flag risk proactively to the Directors, with clear and timely reporting.
- Client & Stakeholder Management: Serve as the senior point of contact for clients on site, maintaining open, honest and proactive communication throughout the construction phase. Manage relationships with building managers, landlords, occupiers and consultants, ensuring the company reputation for integrity and partnership is upheld at every touchpoint. Lead client-facing progress meetings, providing transparent programme and quality updates.
- Health, Safety & Compliance: Champion a best-in-class health and safety culture across all sites, ensuring full compliance with CDM regulations and all relevant legislation. Maintain up-to-date RAMS, site documentation and H&S audits, and embed a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe practices. Oversee all project-specific environmental obligations and ensure sustainability standards are upheld on site.
- Quality & Standards: Define and continuously raise the quality benchmark for construction output, introducing and maintaining inspection and snagging processes that ensure a flawless client handover. Lead lessons-learned reviews across completed projects and translate findings into improved delivery processes. Work alongside the aftercare team to ensure a seamless transition post-completion.
Skills & Experience
- Significant experience in a senior construction management role within the commercial interior fit-out sector, ideally with a D&B contractor.
- A strong track record of delivering Cat A and Cat B fit-out projects across a range of scales and complexity, within a London context.
- Proven ability to lead, develop and inspire a multi-disciplinary construction team.
- Excellent commercial awareness with experience managing project budgets, subcontractor accounts and programme controls.
- Outstanding communication skills with the confidence to manage senior client relationships and represent our client externally.
- In-depth knowledge of CDM regulations, H&S legislation and best practice site management.
- SMSTS, First Aid and CSCS Card (Black/Gold) as a minimum; a degree or HND in Construction Management or a related discipline is desirable.
- Experience working with JCT and D&B contract forms is advantageous.
What our client offers
- A leadership role with genuine influence at the heart of a growing, award-winning business.
