Main Purpose of the job: To oversee the basic operational standards of the campus café, ensuring a safe, welcoming and well presented environment for students. The role will support smooth service delivery, maintain compliance with health and safety standards, and act as the first point of contact during the operating period.
Responsible to: Head of Catering and Hospitality
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure the café area is prepared for daily service, ensuring the space is clean, safe, and ready for customers.
- Monitor the café environment during operating hours, ensuring high standards of presentation, hygiene and customer service are maintained.
- Carry out basic operational checks including equipment readiness, stock availability and cleanliness of service areas.
- Act as a point of contact for students, providing friendly customer service and responding to basic queries.
- Ensure food safety, health and safety, and hygiene standards are followed at all times.
- Identify and report any issues, faults, shortages or hazards to the appropriate manager promptly.
- Support basic stock monitoring and replenishment where required.
- Maintain accurate records or checklists related to daily operational standards.
- Promote a positive and professional image of the Students’ Union within the campus café environment.
General Standards:
- Contribute to the aims of the Union supporting other staff and departments, working on cross departmental projects and from time to time helping where required to ensure the Students’ Union fulfils its mission.
- Have a flexible approach to work and undertake any other duties commensurate with the level of appointment deemed relevant by the Head Chef and Chef de Partie.
- Attend meetings, conferences and training events as required.

Person Specification:
- Education, Qualifications and Experience: Basic Food Hygiene Certificate Level 2 – this can be provided.
- Knowledge and Experience: Basic understanding of café or customer service environments. Awareness of health, safety and hygiene standards in public or food service settings. Experience of working independently or supervising small operational tasks.
- Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively during short shifts. Good organisational skills and attention to detail. Ability to identify issues and take initiative to resolve or elevate them appropriately. Excellent customer service skills with a friendly and professional approach.
