About the Role

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Visual Field Technician to join our Ophthalmology Department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. This is a key clinical support role contributing to the delivery of high-quality patient care through visual field assessments and ophthalmic diagnostics.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform automated visual field tests using the Humphrey Field Analyser.
  • Accurately assess spectacle prescriptions using automated focimetry.
  • Clearly instruct and support patients throughout testing procedures.
  • Enter results into the electronic patient notes system and maintain accurate records.
  • Maintain and clean ophthalmic equipment and manage office supplies.
  • Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

  • Basic computer skills GCSE English or Equivalent
  • To have knowledge of the anatomy of the eye, medical background in Ophthalmology.
  • Knowledge of eye conditions and their appropriate treatment.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of working in a Health care environment
  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Previous use of organisational skills

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

  • Clear, concise verbal and written communication to ensure liaison with multi-disciplinary team, patients and carers and to ensure records are kept accurately and in a legible manner
  • Ability to communicate with staff and patients, this will include patients of varying mental and physical abilities and states of anxiety.
  • Courteous with all patients and staff, face to face and on the telephone
  • Ability to give clear instructions
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Motivation to learn new skills
  • Able to organise own workload
  • Able to work alone and in a team
  • The understanding and ability to maintain patient confidentiality
  • Manually dextrous in order to examine with speed and precision and minimal discomfort and to be able to record results accurately

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

  • Able to travel to other sites (including Buckingham Hospital) and off site as necessary
