The Private Sector Housing Manager role is a senior position responsible for overseeing the delivery of private sector housing functions, with a particular focus on housing standards, enforcement and improving conditions across privately rented accommodation.

The role is likely to involve responsibility for managing and overseeing housing enforcement activity, dealing with complex cases and ensuring that statutory housing responsibilities are delivered effectively.

We should be looking for candidates who understand the practical application of housing legislation and can demonstrate experience dealing with poor housing conditions, housing hazards, landlord compliance and enforcement.

Strong experience of HHSRS is highly relevant, together with knowledge of improvement notices, prohibition notices, statutory notices, enforcement action and other interventions available to local authorities.

Candidates who have dealt with complex or high-risk housing cases should be prioritised.

From a seniority perspective, we should target current Private Sector Housing Managers, Housing Enforcement Managers, Housing Standards Managers, Private Sector Housing Team Leaders and Senior Environmental Health Officers with substantial private sector housing experience.

We should also consider experienced EH professionals who have taken responsibility for leading teams, services or complex housing functions.

The successful candidate will need more than technical knowledge.

Leadership, service management, decision making, stakeholder engagement and the ability to provide professional guidance to officers will be important.

Candidates who have experience managing teams or acting as a technical lead should therefore be prioritised.

We should also consider candidates who may be ready to step up into a management role where they have strong private sector housing expertise and demonstrable leadership capability.

The opportunity should be positioned as a chance to take ownership of an important housing function and make a tangible difference to housing standards and enforcement.
