The predicted salary is between 55000 - 65000 £ per year.

Locations - Birmingham or London at least 3 days a week on site.

About the role

You will be helping to enable BT’s strategy and the ambitious plans for its Consumer unit and the wider group to be successful. You will work alongside our team of data lawyers and compliance specialists to advise business stakeholders, ranging from data scientists to marketing, product and commercial teams on data, privacy, digital, AI and data ethics issues. You will principally advise on data, privacy, AI and security issues impacting consumer customers and the teams supporting consumer, but the role will also support other parts of the BT Group as and when required.

What you’ll be doing

  • Providing accurate and timely legal advice, analysis and support on data issues impacting Consumer and other parts of the Group in line with our BT Group Behaviours
  • Advising in a clear and practical manner concerning data & AI issues arising across the range of Consumer propositions in all channels (contact centre, digital, retail and field sales)
  • Providing subject matter expertise advice to procurement and to partnerships lawyers on data contracts and IA clauses
  • Drafting legal advice and risk assessments to enable business stakeholders to understand legal and regulatory risks and requirements
  • Assisting first line impact assessment review team with escalated assessments and drafting data protection impact assessments
  • Delivering initial advice for complaints, disputes or incidents to first line support and escalating to more senior legal team members as necessary
  • Continuously monitoring and sharing knowledge with the broader team on emerging laws or changes in existing data, digital and AI related laws, regulations and guidance
  • Providing customer‑focused guidance, knowhow and training as appropriate to first‑line reviewers and compliance colleagues on relevant aspects of data related law and practice (including data protection, AI, digital and security legislation)
  • Building strong working relationships to connect across the Data Legal Team (a part of People, Data & Compliance) Consumer Product, Partnerships & Regulatory teams and with other stakeholders within Consumer CIO, Data & Governance and BT Protect teams to ensure operational synergies and compliance for Consumer activities

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Qualified lawyer – 2-5 yrs + PQE
  • Understanding of UK and EU data protection laws and practices including UK/GDPR and PECR
  • Experience of drafting and negotiating data related documentation including complex data protection aspects of key agreements
  • Ability to draft clear advice and easy to read customer‑facing documentation
  • Ability to provide clear, concise and practical legal advice and support with a high degree of professionalism

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Ability to plan, organise and prioritise tasks and projects
  • Strong commercial awareness with an understanding of the value drivers of the business
  • Data Protection Qualification (BCS/ISEB or CIPP/E) - Highly Desirable
  • A logical and analytical approach to advice
  • Creative problem solving and solutioning abilities
  • Ability to remain calm and controlled in fast and pressurised environment
  • Strong team player
