The HSE lawyer will be responsible for providing specialist legal advice on health, safety and environmental matters, with some exposure to property-related work. This role involves supporting the business on HSE risk, handling and advising on claims, and helping to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks. The HSE lawyer will work closely with stakeholders across the organisation, drafting clear written advice (including for senior leadership), supporting casework and agreements, and contributing to the continuous improvement of our approach to HSE law and risk management.
What you'll be doing:
- Provide legal advice on health, safety and environmental (HSE) matters across BT, with a particular focus on a constantly developing regulatory landscape.
- Support on health and safety claims (both litigated and non-litigated), using strong drafting skills to prepare clear, well-structured written advice for senior stakeholders, including Board and ExCo.
- Work closely with internal stakeholders to understand business priorities, construct persuasive legal arguments, and communicate risk in a practical, solutions-focused way.
- Manage a defined portfolio of property-related matters (for example tunnel asset protection agreements) while supporting on wider HSE issues as required.
- Keep up to date with relevant HSE legislation, case law and regulatory developments, and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal policies, processes and guidance.
Qualifications:
- Qualified solicitor - 2 yrs PQE or more.
- Broad experience of Health and Safety claims (both litigated and not litigated) and environmental incidents.
- Some knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework in which BT operates.
- Strong drafting and written advisory skills, including the ability to produce clear, persuasive advice for senior stakeholders.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and influence in a constructive way.
- Keen, proactive attitude with strong analytical and problem-solving skills and a commitment to developing expertise in a fast-evolving area of law.
Preferred Skills and Experiences:
- In-house experience in a corporate with a significant property and/or infrastructure footprint.
- Experience working on projects in the telecoms or infrastructure sectors.
