An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior or Principal Electrical Design Engineer to join a newly established in-house design team within a well-established M&E contractor (Building Services). This role is pivotal in developing and strengthening the electrical design capability, transitioning design services from external consultancies to a fully integrated internal function. The successful Electrical Engineer will play a key role not only in delivering high-quality electrical designs but also in shaping the growth, structure, and long-term vision of the team. This position offers the opportunity to influence standards, processes, and recruitment while leading diverse and technically challenging projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead electrical design across a range of projects from concept (RIBA Stage 1) through to construction (RIBA Stage 5).
- Undertake and oversee:
- Cable sizing and calculations
- Lighting design and lux calculations
- Load assessments
- Power distribution design
- Surveys and condition reports
- Technical specifications and reports
- Ensure compliance with current regulations, British Standards, and best practice guidance.
- Coordinate with mechanical, architectural, and structural disciplines.
- Project Leadership
- Act as the electrical lead on projects.
- Manage project deliverables, technical risk, and program coordination.
- Attend design meetings, client briefings, and site visits.
- Work closely with site teams and contractors to resolve technical queries.
- Support both design & build and design-only projects.
- Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Assist clients in developing project scope and defining technical requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and value engineering input.
- Represent the electrical discipline in client meetings and design reviews.
- Maintain strong working relationships with contractors and consultants.
- Team Development & Growth
- Lead the electrical discipline within the new design team.
- Contribute to recruitment, mentoring, and development of junior engineers.
- Help define design standards, templates, and quality assurance processes.
- Support the strategic growth and evolution of the in-house design function.
Required Experience & Attributes
- Significant experience in electrical building services design.
- Proven ability to lead projects electrically from concept through to delivery.
- Strong technical capability across all aspects of electrical design.
- Experience working across multiple RIBA stages.
- Confident in a client-facing role.
- Comfortable working both in office and on active construction sites.
- Commercial awareness and understanding of contractor-led project environments.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
