The Specialist Nurse is a practitioner with extensive clinical knowledge within the field of Rheumatology. The post holder’s role will be to deliver specialist nursing care and treatments, education and counselling to patients, co-ordinating care between the rheumatology unit and home environment. The post-holder will work closely with other members of the Rheumatology teams in primary and secondary care to deliver evidence based care to patients.

The post holder will support patients with identified significant rheumatology conditions, providing nursing care, support and education of these patients and their carers. The post holder will collaborate with key members of the primary and secondary care in the provision of education, advice and support in relation to this specific group of patients. The post holder will continually pursue their own personal/professional development to provide an expert knowledge base on which clinical excellence can be supported.

The post holder will be responsible for the development and coordination of the rheumatology nurse specialist service within the local health economy, where based. The post holder will establish and maintain links with a broad range of healthcare professionals, managers and support workers within both primary and secondary care.

Responsibilities
  • Provide professional, clinical leadership in all issues related to Rheumatology and to patients, carers, nurses and other professionals throughout the Trust.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse on Part 1 of the NMC Register (Adult).
  • Have successfully completed a non-medical prescribing qualification.
  • Training in advanced communication skills.
