The Sexual Health Advisor works as part of the multi-disciplinary team in GUM and HIV Medicine to provide information and advice to patients to help them to make informed choices about their sexual health. An important aspect of the role is to offer advice to minimise the risks of infection. The health advisor will have excellent communication skills to support patients through a diagnosis, including how to understand and manage their condition and how to reduce possible onward transmission.
The health advisors are expected to be easily accessible to the general public in Northern Ireland, both in person and by telephone in order to provide accurate information and support. Specialist knowledge in relation to sexual health (including HIV) is required. The health advisors have a key public health role through completing accurate and timely partner notification and providing surveillance data. A non-judgemental approach and the ability to reflect on their own values is essential. The ability to work with a range of public, private and voluntary organisations is an important part of the role.
Responsibilities
- Deliver specialist education and counselling to patients accessing the GUM and HIV service.
- Review, monitor and support the Health Advisor team to ensure that the team provides a gold standard of care for patients attending the GUM clinic, including those patients attending with complex needs.
- Be a highly specialist resource providing clinical expertise in care, advice and support within the specialist area of GUM and HIV services.
- Lead on the delivery and promotion of evidence-based practice in line with local and national guidelines.
- Collaborate with key members of the primary and secondary care team in the provision of education, advice and support in relation to GUM and HIV.
Skills and Qualifications
- Registered Nurse or Midwife on live NMC register OR
- CQSW/Diploma in Social Work on the live NISCC register OR
- Relevant degree in Psychology, Health Science, Social Sciences, Health Promotion/Education OR
- A relevant higher qualification of MSc in Counselling, Health Promotion/Education, Public Health.
