As our EMC/RF Technical Specialist, you will be the technical authority for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio frequency (RF) testing, providing the expertise needed to design, develop and embed world‑class laboratory capabilities.

You will help define how the laboratory operates from specifying and commissioning state‑of‑the‑art equipment to developing test methodologies, safe systems of work and technical best practices.

You will play a key role in ensuring services continue to meet the highest standards of technical excellence, quality and accreditation, working collaboratively with engineering, laboratory operations, quality and commercial teams to build a capability that delivers confidence to customers and supports the continued growth of BSI's product testing services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise within EMC and RF testing activities.
  • Support the design, setup, commissioning, and validation of new EMC/RF laboratory facilities and equipment.
  • Define equipment specifications and support selection, procurement, and acceptance activities for new test systems and infrastructure.
  • Develop, review, and maintain EMC/RF test methods, procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure testing activities are delivered in accordance with applicable international standards, accreditation requirements, and internal quality systems.
  • Support accreditation activities including method validation, uncertainty analysis, audits, and technical reviews.
  • Review and approve technical test reports and support resolution of technical issues with customers and stakeholders.
  • Act as a technical mentor and provide guidance and training to laboratory personnel.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives relating to laboratory capability, efficiency, automation, and technical quality.
  • Support investigation and implementation of new technologies, standards, and testing methodologies.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Engineering teams to support laboratory improvement and strategic investment projects.
  • Represent BSI within relevant technical committees, industry groups, or customer engagements where required.
  • Work safely and ensure compliance with all relevant HSE and quality requirements.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong technical expertise in EMC and RF testing principles, methodologies, and laboratory practices.
  • Experience working within an accredited laboratory environment, ideally ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Good understanding of EMC and Radio standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting EMC/RF test equipment and instrumentation.
  • Experience developing or applying test methods and technical procedures.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical standards and apply engineering judgement.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation and reports.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively within project timelines.
  • Ability to collaborate across technical, operational, and commercial teams.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience supporting the setup, commissioning, or expansion of EMC/RF laboratory facilities.
  • Experience specifying, validating, or accepting new test equipment and infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting UKAS accreditation activities, audits, and uncertainty analysis.
  • Knowledge of automation, digitisation, or modern laboratory systems.
  • Professional membership or working towards professional registration.
  • Additional EMC/RF‑specific training or certifications.
