About the role: We are hiring a Group Sustainable Operations Manager to lead the delivery of BSI’s operational sustainability and net zero strategy across our global footprint. This role is accountable for delivery, not just design – translating plans into implemented actions with measurable outcomes. You’ll work across multiple functions and regions to drive decarbonisation, improve sustainability data and reporting, and embed environmental responsibility into day-to-day operations. If you’re a delivery-focused sustainability leader who thrives on accountability, cross-functional coordination, and measurable change, this role offers a rare opportunity to make a global impact from day one.
Location expectation: This is a remote role, with the expectation to visit UK operational sites 2–3 days per month for purposeful presence – supporting decarbonisation discussions with key stakeholders including Property and Facilities teams. Key sites include Covent Garden, Milton Keynes, Hemel Hempstead, and Loughborough.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of BSI’s operational sustainability and decarbonisation strategy, translating strategy into clear, time-bound implementation plans across Scopes 1, 2 and priority Scope 3 categories.
- Day to day management of BSI’s pathway to net zero, including energy, travel, supply chain, and internal carbon budgets, working with global Functions and Divisions to track performance against annual targets and milestones.
- Provide technical expertise in GHG accounting (ISO 14064-1), supporting audit readiness and data assurance.
- Engage confidently with senior stakeholders, proactively resolving blockers and holding delivery owners to account.
- Embed sustainability into operational decision-making, capital planning, and governance frameworks.
- Support circular economy, water, and biodiversity performance reporting and improvement.
- Analyse sustainability data to identify insights, trends, and improvement opportunities.
- Manage workstreams independently while supporting the Group Head of Sustainable Operations.
- Experience working with complex Scope 3 categories where delivery relies on influence, governance, and change rather than direct control.
To be successful in the role, you will have
- Demonstrated experience delivering decarbonisation and sustainability outcomes (not just strategy design).
- Strong stakeholder and project management skills leading cross-functional teams.
- Hands-on experience with ISO 14064-1 (or demonstrable equivalent practical experience), particularly for audit or assurance.
- Proven ability to manage and interpret complex sustainability data, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data validation techniques.
- Strong communication skills - able to translate data into practical insights and influence action.
- A proactive, collaborative, and delivery-focused approach.
Desirable
- ISO 14064-1 Practitioner or Lead Auditor certification (or equivalent).
- Experience in global, matrixed organisations.
- Experience using sustainability data, carbon accounting or reporting platforms.
- Background in sustainability reporting, disclosure, and verification.
- Degree in environmental science, sustainability, or engineering (or relevant equivalent experience).
