Bryan & Armstrong are supporting a leading infrastructure contractor in the search for an experienced Project Environmental Sustainability Manager to join their team delivering major infrastructure works in the South East. This is an excellent opportunity for an environmental professional with experience in civil engineering or infrastructure projects to play a key role in ensuring environmental compliance, sustainability performance and best practice across project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all environmental aspects of project delivery, including chairing project environmental meetings.
- Attend project progress meetings providing guidance, reporting and advice on environmental performance.
- Act as the primary interface with client and stakeholder environmental teams.
- Review client environmental documentation and ensure robust site-specific environmental management plans are implemented.
- Provide technical guidance to project teams on environmental legislation, controls and compliance requirements.
- Investigate environmental incidents and ensure effective reporting, corrective actions and lessons learned.
- Manage environmental staff including Environmental Advisors, Environmental Clerks of Works and specialist consultants.
- Oversee environmental permits, consents and approvals required by the project.
- Manage environmental KPIs and performance reporting across the project lifecycle.
- Maintain and continually improve the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP).
- Ensure project systems align with environmental standards, regulatory requirements and company procedures.
- Maintain legal compliance registers and ensure project teams understand and comply with environmental legislation.
- Analyse environmental performance data, inspections and audits to identify improvement opportunities.
- Support internal and external environmental audits and inspections.
- Provide environmental input into supplier and subcontractor evaluations.
- Deliver environmental training, briefings and toolbox talks to project teams.
- Undertake regular site environmental inspections and audits.
- Build strong relationships with environmental regulators, stakeholders and supply chain partners.
About You
- Proven experience implementing Environmental Management Systems aligned to ISO 14001.
- Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Experience working on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
- Ability to lead, coach and mentor environmental professionals and project teams.
- Degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science or similar, or equivalent experience.
- Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) / Full IEMA membership, or working towards.
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and reporting skills.
Desirable Experience
- Environmental auditing qualification.
- Experience engaging with industry groups or environmental regulators.
- Commercial awareness within major infrastructure projects.
This is a full-time permanent role, working 42.5 hours Monday to Friday, and is available to start as soon as possible upon appointment. The notice period is 1 week during probation, rising to 1 month thereafter and is paid on a monthly, salaried basis. Salary offered (£70k-£80k) will be dependent on experience. You will be entitled to a company car / £6k car allowance + 25 days holiday plus bank holidays + pension + private medical + up to 10% bonus.
