What's the role?

Due to continued company growth, we are recruiting for a Senior RTS Design Engineer able to deliver project design outputs to agreed contractual timescales and technical requirements. The ideal candidate will have proven ability to deliver end‑to‑end SCS/SCADA/Telecommunication design solutions, including installation planning, technical reporting, and compliance with industry standards. To succeed in this role, candidates must have extensive experience working within the UK power distribution and transmission sector, including engagement with major clients such as Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), UK Power Networks (UKPN), National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), and Northern Powergrid (NPG), including work on 11 kV, 33 kV, and 132 kV systems (including data centre transmission projects). Strong capability in SCS/SCADA/Telecommunication/Telemetry calculations, design documentation, and compliance with regulatory frameworks, combined with a solid foundation in health & safety, risk management, and construction design processes. The role covers the entire project lifecycle from tendering through delivery and handover to project closeout. Working conditions – Hybrid working model with requirement to travel to other office locations across the UK for team meetings/site visits. A full driving licence is essential for this role. 40 contractual hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Able to work effectively as part of an integrated delivery team.
  • Ability to liaise with Commercial, Planning and Project Management colleagues internally, as well as clients and suppliers externally.
  • Responsible for estimating resource requirements and equipment quantities and specifications.
  • Identify appropriate delivery partners where work needs to be outsourced and will advise commercial colleagues and the Project Manager regarding technical details of what is needed.
  • Support tenders to determine the project requirements, the scope of work and the applicable deliverables.
  • Support project reviews and monthly project status reports.
  • Communicate regularly with all stakeholders to ensure a common understanding of requirements and project status.
  • Produce engineering documentation including technical elements of RFIs and TQs.
  • Assure that SCS/SCADA/Telecommunication/Telemetry requirements are met by designs.
  • Identify contract changes and risks and inform and assist the Project Engineer with preparing CEs and EWNs as appropriate.
  • Design and management of SCS/SCADA/Telecommunication/Telemetry and Operational Technology Network systems across power distribution and transmission sector.
  • Preparation of SCS/SCADA/Telecommunication/Telemetry Specification Reports (DSR) and technical documentation.
  • Interpretation of design drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Calculations of SCS/SCADA/Telecommunication/Telemetry systems, including power and bandwidth analysis and system design.
  • Integration with legacy systems.
  • Control panel wiring schematics and industrial control systems design.
  • Data cabling, telemetry wiring, and control system integration.
  • Project coordination and design compliance within CDM regulations.
  • Health & Safety management and risk assessment implementation.

What we’re looking for

  • Degree in Engineering, Science, Telecommunications, NVQ Level 6, or equivalent proven industry experience.
  • Relevant NVQ Level 6.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng), but candidates who are working towards this status will be considered.
  • Ability to lead and supervise a team of engineers.
  • Familiar with the use AutoCAD & other drafting software.
  • Advanced user of MS Office tools.
  • Understanding of substation HV electrical design philosophies.
  • Excellent report writing & stakeholder skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams.
  • Strong decision‑making skills.
  • A good working knowledge of common industry standards.
  • Ability to work with NEC contract requirements particularly Option A and Option C.
  • Working knowledge of CDM Designers responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of electrical installation in a substation environment.
  • Experience of working with NEC contract requirements is desirable.
  • Previous SCS/Telecommunication/Telemetry and Operational Technology Network Engineering experience in the HV substation environment.
  • Experience of utilising design software is essential.
  • CDM regulations as relating to Principal Designer function is essential.
