Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST) at Brunel University London, Uxbridge Campus, is recruiting a Research Assistant / Research Fellow for the PIVOT project supported by Innovate UK/APC. The role primarily focuses on the performance of aluminium alloys through manufacturing, micro‑structure analysis, tensile testing, modelling, and simulation to deliver state‑of‑the‑art solutions for the automotive sector.

    • Research Assistant: £37,118 – £39,114 (inclusive of London Weighting); potential to progress to £40,202
    • Research Fellow: £41,292 – £48,557 (inclusive of London Weighting); potential to progress to £52,761

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the PIVOT project team to achieve defined project goals.
  • Conduct manufacturing, micro‑structure analysis and tensile testing of aluminium alloys.
  • Perform micro‑structural characterisation of aluminium alloys.
  • Develop and run modelling and simulation studies to strengthen alloys.
  • Support the delivery of cutting‑edge research outcomes for automotive applications.
  • Prepare project progress reports, final reports and publish findings.
  • Present results at internal seminars, project progress meetings, and national/international conferences.
  • Collaborate with BCAST researchers and industry engineers.

Qualifications and Experience

  • PhD in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • For Research Assistants, VIVA must be completed before interview and final thesis awarded before hire.
  • Strong research experience in solidification of metallic materials.
  • Deep knowledge of micro‑structure and mechanical properties of metallic materials.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Team‑player attitude and ability to work collaboratively.
