Job focuses on contaminant removal & ultra‑low‑flux melt processing for upcycling aluminium alloys. It involves developing methods to remove inclusions and impurities, and implementing ultra‑low flux melt refining for gas‑fired, reverberatory, and other industrial aluminium furnaces. Designs process recipes with flow control, thermal management and alkali removal.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine contaminant removal and ultra‑low flux melt processing techniques.
  • Design process recipes and control strategies for industrial aluminium furnaces.
  • Implement real‑time process optimisation and advanced sensor integration.
  • Analyse environmental impacts using life‑cycle assessment and target reductions in COâ‚‚e, energy consumption, hazardous substances and slag generation.

Qualifications

  • BSc or higher in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or related field.
  • Working towards a PhD in Materials Science / Metallurgy / Material Engineering (Metal) is preferred.
  • At least two years of hands‑on experience in aluminium manufacturing, especially aluminium casting.
  • Experience with aluminium refining processes and contamination control.

  • Salary: Grade R1 – Research Assistant £36,640–£38,638 per annum inclusive of London weighting; Research Fellow £40,757–£44,179 per annum inclusive of London weighting.
  • Hours: Full‑time.
  • Contract: Fixed‑term 36 months.
  • Location: Brunel University London, Uxbridge Campus.
