We are seeking an experienced, organised and proactive Temporary Practice Manager to join our GP practice on a six-month fixed-term contract. The successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day management of the practice, support the GP Partners and ensure clinical and non-clinical services operate safely, efficiently and effectively. This is a hands-on role requiring strong leadership, organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced primary care environment.

The postholder will work closely with GP Partner, clinical and administrative teams, PCN colleagues and external stakeholders to maintain effective practice systems, address operational issues and ensure key deadlines and contractual obligations are met. Applicants should have demonstrable management experience within General Practice or Primary Care, excellent people management and IT skills, a strong understanding of primary care finances, HR processes, CQC standards, information governance and NHS contractual requirements. The successful candidate must be able to quickly familiarise themselves with existing systems, provide effective leadership and stability, and ensure a comprehensive handover at the end of the six-month contract.

Main Duties of the Role

  • Support the GP Partner in the effective management of the practice, ensuring tasks, priorities and agreed actions are completed accurately and within required timescales.
  • Provide leadership and oversight of all practice staff, ensuring employees fulfil their roles and responsibilities and maintain appropriate standards of performance, conduct and accountability.
  • Work closely with the Partners to maintain and improve practice performance, service quality and patient safety, ensuring compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee Significant Events, ensuring incidents are appropriately recorded, reviewed and investigated.
  • Lead meetings where required and ensure learning outcomes and agreed actions are implemented and followed through.
  • Manage formal complaints, ensuring timely investigation and responses, with learning outcomes and service improvements identified, implemented and monitored.
  • Chair Practice and other relevant meetings, maintaining accurate minutes, action logs and ensuring agreed actions are completed.
  • Engage with and participate in Primary Care Network (PCN) meetings, initiatives and activities.
  • Lead and oversee the practice's call and recall systems, ensuring effective patient follow-up and supporting achievement of QOF, Enhanced Services and other contractual targets.

Job responsibilities

The Practice Manager will report to the GP partner for all general management responsibilities as indicated above to ensure the service delivery meets all contractual outcomes and regulatory standards.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Excellent understanding and experience of the financial aspect of primary care practice.
  • Good understanding of NHS pensions.
  • Excellent knowledge of EMIS.
  • Good HR knowledge and skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisational skills and able to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a varied workload.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Confident and proficient in using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Communicate effectively with other employees to build positive relationships.
  • Be able to adapt their communication style where appropriate.
  • Work effectively with all functions to deliver the business aims.
