The Senior Mechanical Designer will lead the mechanical design of machined and fabricated components/products for use within the steel rolling process, producing and reviewing 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks. This position also involves the development of product concepts, performing design calculations, tolerance studies, and design-for-manufacture reviews.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design of cast, machined and fabricated components/products for use within the steel rolling process.
- Produce and review 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor or Creo.
- Development of product concepts.
- Perform design calculations, tolerance studies and design-for-manufacture reviews.
- Produce and manage Bill of Materials (BOMs) and design documentation.
- Line manage and technically mentor 2-3 designers/engineers, setting priorities and ensuring quality and consistency of design output.
- Review and approve drawings and models, ensuring compliance with standards, customer specifications and international codes.
- Manage change control processes and engineering release documentation.
- Coordinate design workloads with project managers to meet project milestones and delivery dates.
- Act as a technical point of contact for internal stakeholders and where required, directly with customers.
- Collaborate with manufacturing partners and suppliers to resolve technical issues.
- Actively participate in hands-on mechanical assembly and build of prototype and production equipment.
- Support functional testing, fault finding and validation of mechanical systems, taking ownership of identifying issues, implementing design improvements and driving solutions through to completion.
- Use 3D printing and rapid prototyping methods to produce and iterate component designs.
Requirements
- Significant experience in mechanical design engineering within heavy machinery, steel, metals or similar process industries.
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or Inventor.
- Experience reviewing and approving engineering designs and technical documentation.
- Prior experience mentoring or supervising other designers or engineers.
- Willingness to travel internationally approximately four times per year.
