Laboratory Assistant
Contract: 12 months (likely extensions)
Location: Colworth, Sharnbrook (full-time)
Rate: £320 per day
Are you organised, practical and interested in food, laboratory work and product development? We are currently recruiting for a Laboratory Assistant to join the R&D team of a leading global FMCG organisation at its Colworth site. This is a hands-on role supporting the development and testing of innovative food products. You will work closely with Technical Project Leaders, Product Developers and Process Engineers, helping to ensure laboratory experiments, product prototypes and pilot trials are delivered efficiently and safely.
The Role
- Preparing laboratory mixes and materials in accordance with technical specifications.
- Supporting laboratory experiments, product prototyping and pilot trials.
- Ordering, receiving, storing and organising ingredients and packaging materials.
- Preparing materials and components for laboratory and pilot plant activities.
- Recording experimental and trial data accurately.
- Coordinating the shipment of ingredients, prototypes and samples.
- Carrying out routine laboratory assessments, including physical property measurements and stability evaluations.
- Maintaining high standards of laboratory organisation, housekeeping, food hygiene and safety.
- Identifying opportunities to improve laboratory workflows and ways of working.
What We're Looking For
You don't necessarily need extensive laboratory experience. We're looking for someone with a practical mindset, strong organisational skills and a genuine willingness to learn. You should have:
- Strong organisation, planning and time-management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- An interest in food, ingredients and product development.
- Strong data-recording and analytical skills.
- Good awareness of risk, safety and quality.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Fluent English.
Previous experience in a food manufacturing, laboratory or technical environment would be advantageous, as would an understanding of food hygiene, food safety and laboratory good practices. This is a practical position, so you'll need to be comfortable spending significant periods of time on your feet and undertaking manual activities such as preparing ingredients, producing mixes, moving materials, organising storage areas and packing shipments.
