The Council has two depots, one in Redditch (B98 7SN) and one in Bromsgrove (B60 3EX). Our team is looking for a qualified and experienced HGV Mechanic to work primarily out of the Bromsgrove Depot, with flexibility to support both depots as required. The Depot Workshops provide repair and maintenance for the Council's internal fleet across Environmental Services and Housing, which includes a diverse range of HGVs, light vehicles and road‑going plant.
Responsibilities
- Conduct chassis and equipment fault diagnoses and execute necessary body and chassis repairs.
- Ensure all repairs meet VOSA Standards.
- Prepare vehicles for MOT inspections with precision.
- Complete jobs on time and address additional tasks promptly.
- Complete relevant paperwork and input data into DE systems.
- Execute tasks at either depot and support off‑site breakdowns with adaptability.
- Communicate professionally with customers, exceeding expectations.
- Maintain high housekeeping standards in the workshop.
- Pursue ongoing training for skill enhancement.
- Ensure vehicles are fit for purpose and uphold quality standards within your skill set.
- Provide excellent customer service and care.
- Complete and return all required records and documents.
- Prioritise personal health and safety at all times.
- Follow and support the development of risk assessments and maintain safe practices.
- Identify and report potential hazards.
Qualifications & Experience
- City & Guilds Level 3 qualification in Heavy Motor Vehicle Engineering, or equivalent.
- Qualified to VOSA standards for HGV inspections and tests.
- Qualified MOT Nominated Tester Class 4, 5, 7 to support full‑time MOT retail and Taxi Nominated Tester responsibilities.
- Experience conducting maintenance, inspection, repair and test services for a diverse fleet including light vehicle vans/Tipper's, small plant machines, sweepers, waste tankers, and large refuse vehicles.
- Experience performing MIG welding, gas and electric welding (preferably coded, but not essential).
- Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic diagnosis/repair.
- Possess a full LGV Class 2 Category C licence.
- Ability to work independently, meet strict deadlines, and manage commercial vehicle repair and servicing.
- Tech‑savvy with familiarity in fleet management or workshop IT systems and vehicle technology.
- Understanding of compliance and associated health & safety requirements.
- Previous experience in a similar role.
- Experience in maintenance and repair of RCVs or similar vehicles.
Work Schedule
Alternating weekly shift rota: early shifts for one week followed by late shifts the next week, covering 6.30am – 6pm at each depot.
