The Design & Technology programme at Bromley Schools' Collegiate prepares you to teach a wide range of design and technology disciplines, including Resistant Materials (RM), Product Design, Textiles, and Food & Nutrition. The course combines practical teaching experience with the development of subject-specific knowledge, ensuring that you can inspire students to engage with creative problem-solving and innovation. You’ll be trained to teach students how to design, prototype, and create products, as well as how to understand the materials and technologies used in the design process. The course includes two placements, allowing you to apply your learning in real classroom settings and develop a range of teaching strategies.

Key Focus Areas: The programme focuses on teaching practical design skills such as CAD (Computer-Aided Design), prototyping, and the use of materials like wood, metal, and plastic. You’ll also teach students the principles of sustainability and product development, ensuring they are equipped to meet the demands of the modern world. In addition to design principles, you will also cover the teaching of Textiles (fashion design and garment construction), Food & Nutrition (healthy eating and culinary skills), and RM (working with materials to solve real-world problems).

Mentoring and Support: Experienced mentors will support you throughout your placements, helping you refine your teaching methods and classroom management skills. Regular feedback will help ensure that you’re well-prepared to inspire students and teach effectively in Design & Technology.

Bursaries & Scholarships: A £26,000 bursary is available for eligible candidates, with DfE scholarships offering £31,000 for high-calibre applicants. These scholarships come with additional benefits, including subject-specific mentoring and professional development events.

Entry Requirements: Applicants should have a degree (minimum 2:2) in Design & Technology or a closely related field. You will also need GCSEs in English and Maths (C/4 or above). No prior classroom experience is required, although any relevant experience with young people is beneficial.

Fees: QTS only: £8,000 QTS with PGCE: £9,200 (These fees are fixed for September 2025)
