We are currently developing a Universal, Targeted Specialist model in mainstream schools, delivering EHCP intervention, as well as expanding our buy-in service in mainstream schools, special schools and provisions. Day-to-day, you will provide assessment and therapy services to a mixed paediatric caseload with speech, language and communication needs, as well as report writing and opportunities for training parents/carers and those working with children with SLCN.
Once established within the team, there are opportunities for working within one of many special schools and provisions with support, working with children with a variety of severe, additional and complex needs, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Difficulties, Developmental Language Disorder and Speech Disorders. Compensation is contingent upon NHS experience and current banding/pay point. The post holder is responsible to safeguard children, young people and adults at risk. To provide a speech and language therapy service to patients with communication and/or swallowing disorders with appropriate support from a supervisor. To make a differential diagnosis based on evidence from assessment, leading to decisions about intervention/treatment, seeking advice as appropriate.
To communicate complex condition-related information from assessment to clients, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions. To maintain sensitivity at all times to the emotional needs of patients/clients and their careers in particular when imparting potentially distressing information regarding the nature of the patient/clients difficulties and implications of the same.
To initiate and provide a variety of treatment options according to patientโs needs, including the use of interpreters as appropriate, with support from senior therapists. To negotiate and work closely with clients, carers, other professionals and families, agreeing decision-making and prioritisation relevant to the patient/clients management, devising agreed care plans based on best practice, seeking advice as necessary.
To use methods of alternative communication e.g. signing, symbols, speech synthesisers after training to maximise the clients communication. To demonstrate empathy with clients, carers and families and colleagues, aiming to achieve effective communication, particularly where barriers to understanding exist.
