Job overview: Children's Speech & Language Therapist Dysphagia Lead – Permanent, 22.5 hours per week. This role expands our Children’s SLT Service to meet increasing demand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Service Lead for Children's Speech and Language Therapy and coordinate care across the borough.
  • Provide specialist dysphagia and communication support to babies and young children.
  • Lead on new service developments in the discipline.
  • Carry out duties as required, in line with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists Inter‑professional Dysphagia Framework – Specialist Dysphagia Practitioner level.
  • Make differential diagnoses for complex cases, develop intervention plans, and make specialist clinical decisions.
  • Carry out specialist procedures and equipment use, such as tracheostomy management and speech synthesiser use; refer for videofluoroscopy assessments.
  • Communicate complex, condition‑related information to patients or clients, carers, families, and the multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Maintain sensitivity to emotional needs of patients, clients and carers, particularly when delivering potentially distressing information.
  • Initiate and provide a variety of treatment options tailored to patient needs, including use of interpreters when appropriate.
  • Negotiate and collaborate with clients, carers, families and other professionals to agree on decision‑making and prioritisation, following best practice for complex cases.
  • Use alternative and augmentative communication methods (e.g., signing, symbols, speech synthesisers) as indicated from assessment to maximise communication.
  • Demonstrate empathy with clients, carers, families and colleagues to achieve effective communication, especially where barriers exist.

Qualifications

  • Speech and Language Therapy degree.
  • Courses and experience to a Specialist Dysphagia Practitioner level with babies and small children, as described in the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists Inter‑professional Dysphagia Framework.

Professional Registration

  • HCPC Registered Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Registered member of RCSLT.

Experience

  • Evidence of appropriate external and internal training up to master's level where relevant to the specialism.
  • Membership of relevant CEN.

Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including observation, listening and empathy.
  • Highly developed negotiation and problem‑solving skills with clients, carers and other professionals.
  • Excellent analytical skills and a wide knowledge base for case‑load management, assessment and therapy relevant to the client group.
