Bromley Experts by Experience is a small, yet ambitious, Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation. You’ll help us build strong governance and play a key role in ensuring our Trustee Board is able to operate efficiently and accessibly.
The role of Secretary is vital to Bromley Experts by Experience. The organisation has gone through big changes in the last few years. With both a new and growing staff team and Trustee Board, we are committed to further developing both the charity’s governance mechanisms and supporting the Board to reach their potential, so we can have a sustainable future and continue to create change for Deaf and Disabled people across Bromley. The Secretary will play a key role in achieving this.
We are expanding our development of new projects and services, based on input from members, that will create change for Disabled people. With these increased outputs comes the need to ensure we have strong foundations, and that any new activity meets our charitable objectives and strategic priorities. The Secretary will be central to shaping how our wider Trustee Board supports our mission, vision and values.
It’s an exciting time at Bromley Experts by Experience as we’ve just secured our biggest ever funding agreement, from the National Lottery. The funding is for a new Youth Transition Project, enabling us to reach young Disabled people across Bromley and neighbouring boroughs.

- An understanding that it is barriers in society that make that hard. This is called the Social Model of Disability.
- Strong organisational skills.
- Experience of how Trustee Boards operate and of effective charity governance.
- An understanding of how to make meetings accessible.
- Experience of minute‑taking and strong record‑keeping skills.
- Accuracy and efficiency with an eye for detail.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills, communicating in a way that is accessible to you.
- Possess and demonstrate integrity, objectivity, accountability, and honesty.
- An effective team worker, contributing an independent perspective.
- Understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship, the Secretary role, and the financial aspects of running a charity.

What will you be doing?
The Secretary will play a vital role for Bromley Experts by Experience, working with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chair of Trustees. As part of a new, expanded Board of Trustees at Bromley Experts by Experience, you’ll help the Board carry out their duties in an efficient manner, ensuring all governance documents and procedures are followed. The Secretary will ensure the smooth and efficient running of accessible trustee board meetings and will be the Trustee responsible for leading preparation, administration, and delivery of the AGM.
Like you, our Board members are all individuals with Lived Experience of Disability who are passionate about Disabled people’s equity and inclusion. They each bring different professional and personal perspectives and have different levels of experience as a Trustee.
The Secretary will ensure the trustees recognise and complete relevant actions related to their decisions, and that all decisions made by the trustees comply with the relevant legislative and regulatory requirements the charity is subject to, are in accordance with Bromley Experts by Experience’s governing documents, reflect the aims of the charity, and continue to provide benefit to our members, beneficiaries and local Deaf and Disabled people.
Working closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chair of Trustees, the Secretary will ensure the charity meets all its regulatory requirements, has strong governance and foundations to enable Bromley Experts by Experience to achieve as much as we can in the future.

We follow the Social Model of Disability and our definition of Disabled person includes anyone who faces barriers in society, including:
