Science Technician in Southampton

Brockenhurst College are looking to recruit a Science Technician on a permanent, part time (annualised hours), 32 hours per week (Monday to Thursday) 40 weeks of the year basis. In return, you will receive a competitive salary of £24,834 per annum pro rata plus holiday uplift. We are a high-achieving college who attract around 2,800 sixth form students across the region each year. The Science Technician Role: As our Science Technician, you will undertake a range of technical duties in support of the academic function.

Responsibilities as our Science Technician:

• Preparing, setting up, clearing away, washing up where applicable, and storing apparatus, equipment and materials for lessons, demonstrations, etc.
• Organisation, preparation and running of practical exams and practical course-work.
• Issuing materials and equipment in a safe condition to students and staff.
• Distribution and secure storage of class set of laptops wherever required.
• Assisting staff and students in the use of apparatus and equipment.
• Occasional physical demonstration of experiments and machines to members of staff and students, where this requires the application of acquired skills.
• Preparation and maintenance and appropriate record keeping and storage of stock solutions and stains.
• Responsible for the maintenance of pure stocks of microbiology cultures (following appropriate training).
• Care and preparation of plants including greenhouse.
• Occasional temporary care for insects and pond animals.
• Preparation of dissection material and appropriate disposal afterwards.
• Simple construction, maintenance, fault finding, repair and servicing of machines, equipment and tools, and where necessary, arranging repair via the Senior Technician.
• Informing the Head of Curriculum of any faults which may affect teaching.
• Ensuring clear labelling and storage of apparatus which is undergoing repairs.
• Assisting in the development of new equipment, experiments, assignments, laboratory exercises etc.
• Conducting trial runs of experiments and producing written method instructions where appropriate.
• Assisting in general administration for the Department, including checking answer-phone, addressing letters, sending group emails etc.

As our Science Technician, you'll ideally have:

• GCSE Maths and Science (grade 4/C minimum) or equivalent
• Appreciates that Health and Safety guidance must be followed (training will be provided)
• IT skills
• Organised and methodical.
• Able to adapt to different circumstances.
• Able to work well with teaching and all college staff, being responsive and patient
• Able to communicate effectively with colleagues including staff and students
• Enjoy working as part of a team, yet be capable of working unsupervised
• Some flexibility to enable all annualised hours to be worked at a time which is beneficial to the department.
